Perturbed by the dearth of accommodation for both students and staff of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, the varsity’s Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Otunba Solomon Oladunni, has promised to boost hostel developments in the university.

Oladunni said it is worrisome that only a negligible five percent of the 14,000 regular students are accommodated on campus, leaving the overwhelming majority to seek alternatives within the host community as well as neighbouring towns and villages.

The former Executive Vice Chairman of Mobil Oil Unlimited disclosed this last week when he visited the institution, revealing that steps were already being taken to tackle the infrastructure challenge.

According to him: “It is my commitment to assist this university to make sure we raise funds to help, particularly in the area of housing which is a big challenge to us, and we are already working on that.

“We’ve already had some meetings with some agencies that are willing to assist us. When you realize that only five percent of our students are living on campus, you know that it’s something serious and fraught with dangers. So, we want to raise that percentage to about 80 or more. That is my goal.

“I want to move substantially to that mark, and we are already talking with some people in terms of building hostels for our students. And we are perfecting some arrangements that would be announced in due time.”

The Pro-Chancellor further disclosed that the gesture was also aimed at providing accommodation for both academic and non-academic staff within the campus.
This, he said, would eliminate the precious man hours being wasted in getting to offices and also guarantee basic amenities and conveniences he said are lacking in most of the accommodation available off campus.
