It was a rib-cracking experience, recently, at the Basketmouth’s debut comedy gig in Middlesbrough, UK, dubbed “Basketmouth Unprovoked”, which broke history as the first headline show by an African in the city.

Alongside his brother-in-jokes, Buchi, Basketmouth thrilled no less than a thousand people, at the Middlesbrough Town Hall, as he showcased his witty humour to the common folk.

Packaged by Afrotribe, with support from Send by Flutterwave, the event, which spins off on Basketmouth’s annual Q1 European tour, was one of the most stellar comedy gigs ever held in the area.

Thanking the people of Middlesbrough, especially the African community, Basketmouth expressed his delight at the acceptance of African culture and arts in multiple markets.

“It’s showing progress,” he laughs, before switching to a solemn mien. “We knew how pivotal it is to keep the engine running. Every year, I spread my gospel of comedy to the European market, and even the US markets. Everyone has got to see the value in what we do. And I am glad they do now.”

On his part, Iseunife Ajayi (popularly called Shawnife), Afrotribe’s co-founder, explained that the success of the show was proof that African entertainment has a home in even the most random of regions, urging more entertainers to connect with the black diaspora community.
