Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan facilitates successful masterclass at FESPACO

Nigerians at FESPACO
Award-winning Nigerian filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, recently facilitated a highly successful masterclass on the business of film and the success stories of his KAP Hub and KAP Production at the prestigious Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO).

The masterclass, which was well-attended by film enthusiasts, students, industry professionals, and policy makers including the Executive Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), provided a unique opportunity for participants to learn from Afolayan’s experiences and gain valuable insights into the business of filmmaking.

Afolayan’s participation in FESPACO underscores his commitment to promoting African cinema and sharing his expertise with emerging filmmakers. His KAP Hub and KAP Production have been at the forefront of innovative filmmaking in Nigeria, producing critically acclaimed films that have resonated with audiences worldwide. In addition to the masterclass, Afolayan’s presence at FESPACO was further highlighted by the screening of Ija Ominira, a classic Nigerian film produced by his father, Adeyemi Afolayan, and directed by Ola Balogun. The film was showcased in the Classic section of the festival, celebrating its enduring influence on African cinema. There was also the anticipated screening of Afolayan’s latest film, Recall, at the sidelines of FESPACO. The screening of the film — a supernatural exploration of love, memory, and the mysteries that bind people together was well received.

The film starred leading actress Sharon Ooja, Olarotimi Fakunle and Jimmy Jean Louis in lead roles. FESPACO is the largest and most prestigious film festival in Africa. The festival featured 235 films selected from 1,351 submissions representing 48 countries including Nigeria.

Three Nigerian films — The Legend of The Vagabond Queen Lagos by James Tayler, Matthews Cerf, Temitope Ogungbamila and Samuel Okechukwu; Bush Man by David Schieckrlr (USA/Nigeria) and Tunde Apalowo’s All Colours of the world are Between, Black and White featured in the competition section of FESPACO 2025. But it was Dani Kouyate’s Katanga, La Danse Des Scorpions that was declared winner of the coveted Golden Stallion of Yennenga.
