Emmanuel Akong well known with the stage name Eda Boi is an upcoming artiste signed to Edimas Music. The North American University, Houdegbe, Benin Republic computer science student, whose debut single Fine woman is enjoying massive airplay, gives an insight about his musical plans, life, and education.

What is music to you?
It is my passion; something I live for and cannot do without.

At what point did you realise you want to do music?
I have always loved music from age three; I was very active in my church choir. I officially went into music in 2010, and from that time till date I have been my music career managing and my education.

What was your parents’ reaction to your decision?
My parents never supported it, they just wanted me to study and get a regular job. I never allowed it weigh me down; today, they have gradually accepted what I do.

Is it because the money is rolling in now?
No, not because of money; I think it is because I am almost done with my education. I am in my final year as we speak.

So, what will you be up to with your certificate?
All my life I have always wanted to be self-employed and do my own thing. I feel am going to school just to fulfill my parents desire.

Describe your genre of music
My music is mainly R&B and hip-hop

In this part of the world where R&B is not so well received, do you think you can use it to build a brand for yourself?
One thing about music is that, as long as it is coming from your heart people would relate to it.

What inspired your single, Fine woman?
I was at the studio and when I heard the beat I just flowed with it. It came straight from the heart.

Who inspires your kind of music?
Whiz Khalifa, Jay-Z, 2Pac, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, 2Baba, Wizkid, Yemi Alade, Davido and others too numerous to mention.

When were you signed to Edimas Music?
In 2015, before then I was not signed to any label.

Why Eda Boi?
It is an abbreviation of my name and that of my brother. I was supposed to be doing music with my brother David, but he decided to do something else. So the EDA represents Emmanuel, David and our surname Akong.

What are some of the challenges you have face as an upcoming act?
When I started, I paid for promotions and the manager duped me; I couldn’t do anything because I am just an unknown artiste.

Asides from Fine woman, what other songs have you released or should your fans be expecting?
I would be dropping lots of singles before the end the year and next year. I am also, working on my debut album, and works are already ongoing.

Are there plans for collaboration with some bigger acts?
I really want to work with and it would be fulfilling working with 2Baba, Wizkid, Davido and Davido.
