CouchCONSIDERATIONS of beauty and comfort come into play when selecting a piece of sofa or chair. For upholstery furniture, the fabric is important in making a choice.

Choice of colours, patterns and textures of upholstery fabrics is a matter of expression of taste. The choice is virtually unlimited. However, lifestyle and budget should come into play.

Fabric preferences could tilt towards naturals or synthetics. Natural fabrics include cotton, linen, silk, and wool. Among synthetics are acetate, acrylic, nylon, rayon and polypropylene. Often fabrics are a blend of natural and synthetic fibres designed to provide unmatched beauty and lasting durability.

Generally, fabrics with tighter weaves and durable fibres such as polypropylene or nylon stand up better to the hard use of an active household. More glamorous fabrics such as satin, damasks and brocades can be dramatic and exciting but they should be reserved for seating where serviceability is not a major concern.Couch 1

Like all other household materials, upholstery fabrics get stains. This can be tackled by following some tips. Follow manufacturer’s cleaning instructions if any.

Remove excess soil promptly, by scrapping off residue with a dull knife or spoon, or blotting up spills with absorbent materials as soon as they occur. Be sure to pre-test in an inconspicuous spot.
