Black Reigns in fashion line-Up

The fashion community is abuzz following the recent launch of The Big Black Balance 2025 collection by Nigerian fashion brand Arivee. Known for its luxurious and bespoke creations, the brand, formerly Jewel Jemila, unveiled three standout pieces that have sparked both admiration and critique.

Founded in 2017 by Chimdalu Arinze, the rebranded Arivee has steadily grown into a household name among lovers of contemporary African fashion. The latest collection continues the brand’s commitment to celebrating femininity and elegance, but with an overarching theme: black, in all its richness and symbolism.

One of the standout pieces in the collection is a three-piece ensemble featuring a flowing black and white kimono, a black sleeveless jumper, and wide-legged palazzo trousers. The design embraces the ongoing trend of oversized fashion, which has become popular among women seeking comfort without sacrificing style.

The kimono, crafted from breathable knitted wool, showcases circular and zigzag patterns and is finished with black satin taping that forms a collar-like structure at the nape. The overall aesthetic delivers a powerful visual statement. The look is likened to a blend of modern abaya and agbada, making it a seamless fusion of tradition and urban fashion. The roomy silhouette and clean stitching speak to Arivee’s craftsmanship and creative boldness.

The oversized movement in fashion reflects a shift toward comfort and body positivity. This piece captures that energy with class.

The second look in the collection, a floor-length Swiss lace gown, offers a different kind of allure. Designed with a diamond neckline and dramatic semi-bell sleeves, the gown features structured tailoring that defines the wearer’s figure through four fitted segments, from shoulders to hips before flaring dramatically at the knees.

While the gown’s structure and lace fabric have received applause for their craftsmanship and nod to traditional styles, the all-black colour dulls its impact.

It’s a beautiful piece, no doubt, but the lack of ventilation and the heavy black colour might be impractical for Nigeria’s hot climate. Some slits or lighter hues could have added both comfort and contrast.

Although the choice of Swiss lace was unconventional for ready-to-wear outfits, its heavy texture in black may not suit all weather conditions. Nevertheless, the gown’s pleated detailing and silhouette-enhancing design have won points for elegance and originality.

The final piece in the collection is a black organza wrap top paired with flowing black crepe trousers. The top’s silver sheen brings a much-needed playful energy to the otherwise monochromatic theme of the collection.

Designed with puffy sleeves, a V-neckline, and a layered flay cut, the top is fastened with a cotton belly belt tied in a bow. The trousers complement the wrap top with their breathable fabric and free-cut design.

This outfit strikes the right balance between style and comfort. The silver tone in the organza fabric is a clever choice that elevates the look without the need for additional colour.

This is how you do black-on-black without making it look heavy. The light reflection from the organza, combined with the breathability of the crepe pants, makes it a winner.

The collection has earned its place in the conversation for its bold attempt to redefine black fashion for the modern African woman. The brand’s dedication to craftsmanship, attention to structural detail, and clever use of fabrics are evident in each piece.

However, there’s still room for improvement, particularly in balancing fabric weight with the climate of its primary market. Because even though Black is timeless, it must be breathable too.
