UK-based Nigerian chanteuse, Nkiru, has released a memoir on the unfortunate events of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests in Lagos, Nigeria. Dubbed Suffer, the Afro-fusion classic sees Nkiru serve a daredevil satire on the ill-fated history.

Produced by TYMG, the song radiates for its harmonic blend of traditional African rhythm and RnB delivery. Its brilliant songwriting, which also takes a swipe at social ills such as tribalism, corruption, among others, also adds colour to this record.

“I recorded the song in 2020, after the Lekki Toll Gate massacre. I felt like we were ignored by the government and I decided to get it off my chest using music,” she traces the inspiration behind the single.

The songbird also added that the chants that dominate the record are deliberately placed to endear listeners to get their permanent voters card and vote during next month’s elections.

Born in Canning Town, UK, Nkiru is a vocal powerhouse that stands out for her brilliant fusion of Afrobeats, Soul, Jazz and RnB. Growing up in London, she drew inspiration from the city’s cultural scene and she started experimenting with poetry and rap in 2005.

Admiring singers like Missy Elliot, Lauryn Hill, among others, she began writing songs for artistes like Zlatan, Afro B, Ayobeatz, among others. In 2018, she broke out into the limelight with her song dubbed, Jeje, and since then she has released several other successful singles including Call on Me (2020), and Eyes on You (2022).
