Youshine Girls has advised female teenagers to be cautious about the contents they consume, warning that social media can often present a distorted reality, especially when it comes to lifestyle and material success.
This admonition was given at the empowerment programme titled ‘Empowered for Purpose,’ designed to equip young girls and teenage mothers with practical skills, mentorship, and opportunities for personal growth.
Speaking at the event, Social Media Specialist and Journalist, Olufisola Ige-Lahanmi, urged the youth to avoid falling into the trap of comparing themselves to the seemingly perfect lives showcased online.
“It is important you don’t get carried away by material things you see online. Not everything on social media is real. Some people portray fake lifestyles, and without realising it, others may believe they are living the “best” life. You need to remain authentic, be confident in who you are, and avoid being influenced by everything you see on social media,” she said.
She urged the teenagers to see social media as a tool for empowerment rather than as a form of entertainment, noting that many young entrepreneurs have made it through marketing their business on social media and content engagement.
In her remarks, founder of YouShine Girls, Elizabeth Henry, said the initiative in setting the NGO was rooted in her personal journey, saying, “God allowed me to survive what I went through so I can heal, empower and lead others.”
