As the “Japa” (emigration) craze sweeps Nigeria, a darker reality has emerged, as desperation is driving a shocking surge in scams targeting would-be migrants.

According to Timilehin Taiwo, a licensed educational consultant and Director of Operations at MPIK Global Services and MPIK International Limited, the allure of greener pastures abroad has created a fertile ground for scammers to exploit vulnerable individuals, leaving shattered dreams and financial ruin in their wake.

Speaking with The Guardian, she stated that oversea study is one of the best means to relocate abroad, although it is capital-intensive. She added that it provides applicants an opportunity to learn differently, stressing that Nigerians can legally explore the study routes for relocation.

She said, “Nigerian students for example are familiar with the Nigerian educational system and curriculum. Studying in other countries will expose them to other methods of learning and give them an edge in the international job market and the global scene. It also affords applicants the opportunity to gain international work experience that positions them to relocate.”

The revered educational consultant noted that the most popular study destinations, in no particular order include the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Canada and other countries in the EU.

“These destinations are popular because students have more work opportunities to gain experience. In most of these destinations, students have access to 20 hours work per week. These destinations are also popular because of the warm acceptance for international students, which makes their student population a mix of several cultures,” Timilehin added.

She noted that international study can have a positive impact on the Nigerian economy as it exposes students to developed economies, leaving indelible impact on them. “It has the potential to influence students’ life choices positively and foster a constructive disposition towards work and development in Nigeria.”

Asked how innocent Nigerians can avoid being scammed, the MPIK Director said, “Travel scams are very common especially in developing countries. Some individuals take advantage of the desperation of some Nigerians to swindle them.

“This can be avoided by paying careful attention to details. To avoid scams, Nigerians should verify agents and agencies before committing their precious funds and be cautious of too good to be true offers.

“Travel is as old as human existence, and it presents fresh opportunities. I always advise that people considering internationals travel either to work, study or visit should take time to research and follow the best suited opportunity,” she stated.

On what sets MPIK apart, Timilehin said, “MPIK sets itself apart by delivering on promises, maintaining confidentiality of documents, and boasting an outstanding success rate. We also have an outstanding team of experts working together to make each application a success story. We do not only handle study packages, we also facilitate visit and vacation applications.”

Asked why Ireland is a popular destination in present day, Timilehin explained that Ireland is the only English speaking majority country in the European Union (EU). She added that Ireland is also classified as the third safest country in the world (Global Peace index 2022).

“We place students in schools that offer courses taught in both English and other languages, providing convenience for international students. Ireland characterized by high international graduate employment rates,” Timilehin enthused.
