Lekan Bass, Nigeria’s virtuoso double bassist, shines in international symphony arenas

Adebayo Olalekan, a music virtuoso from Lagos, Nigeria, popularly known as “lekan bass” was born into a non-musical household and began his musical adventure in 2005 as a member of his church’s intermediate choir before being exposed to the double bass.

While undergoing his undergraduate studies at the University of Nigeria Nnsukka, Lekan stayed committed to his Double Bass training, which he was able to join the orchestra, where he began performing and has been the Divine Symphony Orchestra’s lead bassist ever since.

In 2016, Olalekan took several tours to the Stellenboush Chamber music Festival held at Cape Town South Africa, where he participated in master classes by seasoned Double bassist professionals like Leon Bosch (UK), Marienchen Meyer (SA), Jeff Bradetich (USA).

Olalekan has come a long way since beginning to play the double bass, and he has performed in prestigious Orchestral settings both in Nigeria and overseas such as the Chineke Orchestra, NOk Orchestra, the Dulcis Orchestra, Divine Symphony Orchestra and The Muson Symphony Orchestra. He has also acquired several musical certifications both nationally and internationally from the Association Board Royal School of Music in London.

He has performed at prestigious places both in Nigeria and overseas. For the first time in Nigeria, he played the full opera of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Magic Flute “Die Zauberflote” in 2016 which mesmerised the audience, as a result of that there was a repeat of the concert that same year. In a stunning collaboration, Olalekan teamed up with the chineke foundation Orchestra at the south bank centre UK, performing works like the African suite Op.25 No 4 African Dance, Joseph’s Haydn Symphony No104 London.

A recording with the renowned Kora and cellist player Tunde Jegede at the St Stephen’s Cathedral walbrook London promoting both western and African classical music, such works as the Mandé suite, let the elements sing and dance and invocations . In 2018, he was invited to participate in the Mittenwald Master class Double Bass camp held in Germany.

Olalekan has shared the stage with world-renowned musicians and infused African music into his Double Bass (a Western instrument). Among the many countries he has visited, the United Kingdom is one of his favorites, where he has performed and contributed to notable events such as “The African Concert Series” in collaboration with BBC World Services and the Nigerian-British Romanian virtuoso pianist Rebecca Omordia performing African traditional music.

He also joined forces with HACS philharmonic Orchestra and the East London School Of Music for the Queen Elizabeth II platinum jubilee which was held at the Springfield park (UK), performing works by Gabriel Faure Op 50 “Pavane”, Palladio by Karl Jenkins.

Olalekan’s goals and aspiration is to attain proficiency in performances, Solo concerts, A recording of Albums, collaborations with distinguished musicians, promoting African classical music as well as impacting his experiences and mastery to the coming age.
