PRIME Women Builders Foundation of Nigeria (PWBFON) took its yearly programme of skill acquisition, “Empowerment Day 2015,” supported by Jesus Power Gospel Int’l Ministry to Badagry council area recently.

The huge number of people that turned up at the council headquarters were trained on various skills such as bead making, hairdressing, tailoring, cake production, event decoration, headgear, make up, production of household products such as soap, insecticide, hair cream, bleach, air freshener, snacks and cocktail.

Participants were also given talks on how they can deploy their talents to achieve business success, and opportunities that abound in marketing products of various companies. The companies in attendance that made presentations on business opportunities that the women can tap into included Honeywell Flour Mill, Lily Water (May and Baker), Ozone Hair Relaxer, Vitabiotics, and Nobel Rugs and Carpets.

National President of PWBFON, Mrs. Kemi Olofinkua in her welcome address, noted that the theme of the year’s activity, “An Enterprising Heart,” was aimed at challenging them to go after opportunities rather than wait till they come.

“Prime Women Builders Foundation believes that there are so many things you can do. Work is not forever; whatever you are doing, you can do something by the side. The activities learnt here are to build you up,” she said.

Brand Manager of Honeywell Plc, Mr. Lanre Da Silva, while delivering a talk on business success, noted that it is not knowledge that makes a difference in the lives of people but what they do. “There is always opportunity around you; you only need to tap into it. There is no opportunity that is too small,” he submitted, urging them to tie their business ideas to a need in the community.

Da Silva commended the vision and passion of Mrs. Olofinkua, saying: “I’ve been attending this event for the past seven years. I sincerely wonder how she gets the crowd because the crowd keeps coming. I’ve been with her to Ikeja, Alimosho, Ikorodu and the people keep coming. That tells me that there are a lot of people that live below the poverty line, and all they need to get a regular income is just to be told how they can take advantage of their talents and capabilities and turn them into skills. I see women, young people, they keep coming in their thousands.”

Husband of PWBFON President, Rev. Emmanuel Olofinkua, thanked God for making it possible for them to accomplish the vision that God laid in their hearts. “It is highly tasking. What we are doing is not something we are paid by somebody to do or that you are expecting to be paid back. You discover that the people that we have to use for this all are volunteers, so there’s a limit to which you can push them. And in an environment where people have to look for what they’ll get in whatever they may do, I thank God that He raised people to make it a huge success.

“Each year they keep coming. Government said they are doing poverty alleviation; to me it has not really achieved anything. From what we have seen over the years we have done this programme, I can testify that some of the people that we trained are now self-employed in the skills they learnt at this event and are living on it.”

Head of Department, Women Affairs, Poverty Alleviation, Badagry Local Government, Awodiran Olayinka Olusola commended the organisers for bringing the programme to the area, saying it would encourage them to be self-employed and enable women support their homes.

Mrs. Ekwuagana Oluchukwu Roseline, a graduate of Biotechnology came all the way from Iyana Ipaja, in Lagos.
