Remembering Moses Adekola Oluokun (1942—2020)
Sir Moses Adekola Oluokun was born in Ibadan, Nigeria in 1942 to the family of an illustrious timber merchant, Alhaji Oluokun. He died on November 6, 2020, at the age of 78.
He attended primary school in Ibadan and secondary school in Gbogan graduating in 1962. He thereafter joined the Nigerian Police as a Cadet Inspector and served as an aide to the then premier of Western Nigeria, Chief Ladoke Akintola. Thereafter, he was posted to the special branch of the police in several formations across the country, until he was promoted to be one of the pioneer State Directors of Security at the inception of the Nigerian Security Organisation (NSO), comprising the State security service (SSS), Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) . He served as Director of Security in Ondo, Ogun and Bendel states between 1976 and 1986.
He was retired from public service as a Commissioner of Police and Director of State Security in 1986, after 23 years of meritorious service. Thereafter, he ventured into a wide range of business interests, including Chairman of B.S.C (Nigeria) Ltd., an affiliate of Belgian Shipbuilders Corporation which constructed and delivered Nigeria’s first, and Africa’s largest floating dry-dock. He was also the Founder and Chairman of Peak Petroleum Industries Nigeria Limited, Mafdo Holdings and a number of Trading and Financial Services institutions.
In 1992, Oluokun was knighted by the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, Israel for his dedication to the work of the gospel of Jesus Christ. A dedicated ecumenical Christian; he was active in the Foursquare Gospel Church. He was called to die on November 6, 2020, on the eighth anniversary of the passing of his wife, Lady Florence Duronike Oluokun.
He was a man of enduring legacy and repute whose light will never dim because of the irrepressible values that he stood to uphold. He was driven by a passion for excellence, knowledge of God, showing the great values of modesty and humility and undying love for his family and friends.
He is fondly remembered by his children, grandchildren, in-laws, siblings and family members.
