Tennie Oyewole: The quiet force behind Nigeria’s influencer economy

Tennie Oyewole, popularly known as Miss Tennie is not always on the billboards, neither is she usually on centre stages, but this woman of valour who has become a master of her craft, is now at the control panel of Nigeria’s ever-buzzing influencer and creator ecosystem.

With years of deliberate hard work, strategic thinking, and an intimate understanding of how the digital and entertainment worlds truly function, Miss Tennie within the influencer circles has become a leader and a rallying point with a blueprint.

Her journey into the heart of the creator economy began at TikTok Nigeria, where she spent over five years helping to shape what the platform would become in the country. In her first two years, she was instrumental in structuring TikTok’s Nigerian operations; essentially laying the foundation before “TikTok influencer” became a mainstream career choice. She onboarded creators, integrated talents, and helped Nigerian content creators gain visibility at a time when many were still figuring out how to beat the algorithm.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, when the world paused giving rise to a thriving economy of content creation, Miss Tennie doubled down. She scaled creators on the platform, collaborated with public figures and music artistes, and worked closely with talents across Sub-Saharan Africa, spanning Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa, quietly helping African creators claim global digital real estate.

As TikTok evolved from a general content hub into a more specialised platform, Miss Tennie adapted seamlessly. She shifted focus to lifestyle and education, honing in on beauty, makeup, skincare, nails, hair, and storytelling. She led campaigns that amplified African voices and narratives, ensuring creators didn’t just go viral, but went viral with purpose. Somewhere along the line, she noticed a glaring gap: African creators lacked structured, professional talent management. Naturally, she decided to fix it.

This realisation gave birth to TT Effect, a boutique talent management company she ran solo, managing some of Nigeria’s most popular content creators. However, big visions require bigger engines, and about a year ago, Defears entered the picture and partnered with TT Effect, providing the financial and operational muscle to scale what Miss Tennie had already built.

Following the acquisition, she assumed the role of Chief Operating Officer at Defears Management Company, a full-service media and talent management firm delivering end-to-end solutions across entertainment, branding, and experiential marketing. Under Defears, the company has executed successful influencer and music promotion campaigns with major industry players like Mavin Records and Dapper Music.

They also delivered Nigeria’s first-ever TikTok event, a landmark moment for the creator ecosystem. Defears is also the force behind Trenchfest, a cultural event that has recorded over 35,000 total attendees across two cities, featuring heavy-hitting acts like Shallipopi, Seyi Vibez, and more. Beyond entertainment, Defears has worked with a wide range of corporate and lifestyle brands including Guinness, Pepsi, BIC, Oraimo, Mikano, Realme, Viva, First Bank, Let’s Chat, TikTok, MTN, Infinix, iTel, GTBank, MAC Cosmetics, Coca-Cola, Martell, Showmax, Opera Mini, Epic Games, and several others. Proof that Miss Tennie understands both vibes and value.

At the center of it all is Miss Tennie; strategist, operator, connector. Her ambition is clear: to become a leading figure in the creator economy, not just as a manager, but as a solutions provider for brands, talents, and institutions navigating the fast-changing digital space.
