The Admiralty Lawyers Society of Nigeria (ALSN) has called for improved welfare, enhanced training and greater investment in maritime safety infrastructure to boost the productivity and safety of seafarers in Nigeria.
In a statement to commemorate the 2026 International Day of Seafarers, the National President of the society, Angus Obinna Chukwuka, noted that the day remains significant in the international maritime calendar as it recognises and celebrates the invaluable contributions of seafarers to the maritime sector and the global economy.
The society advocated increased training and retraining programmes for seafarers to enhance their capacity, productivity and operational safety.
It also urged the Federal Government to prioritise measures aimed at strengthening salvage and pilotage operations across the country.
According to the statement, strategic foreign policy partnerships and investments in advanced ocean diving and search-and-rescue facilities would significantly improve the safety and efficiency of seafarers.
The society stressed that the present moment offers Nigeria an opportunity to reposition its maritime sector for sustainable growth and development.
