The just concluded 19th edition of Akwaaba African Travel Market (AFTM) 2023, an international travel, tourism and hospitality event organised annually in Lagos to showcase products in Africa and around the world has again benefited stakeholders for networking and growth.

The AFTM 2023, which was held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, addressed a number of issues in the industry including the constant increase in international airfare.

The 19th AFTM, which was unveiled by the governor of Cross River State Bassey Otu kicked off with colourful ceremonies and activities such as electrifying dance moves of the Calabar Carnival dancers, the Lagos State talking drummers, the mascot on display etc. The highlight of the opening ceremony was the presentation of the Travellers awards to deserving individuals and organisations.

Speaking, Governor Otu who appreciated the AFTM organiser Ambassador Ikechi Uko for his relentless effort in the industry and sustainability of the travel market, seized the moment to announce this year’s edition of Carnival Calabar themed ‘Season of Sweetness’ unveiled the event.

The governor noted that his administration is determined to sustain the carnival. “Carnival Calabar has come of age and should deploy all efforts at sustainability and inclusion to achieve set goals whilst exploring a robust Public Private Partnership framework to achieve mutually beneficial relations”.

Otu however revealed that he has directed that some of the events which were struck out for the carnival such as the children’s carnival, Aqua show and the exciting and colorful Night of Kings and Queens be returned to the carnival in order to create more opportunities for sponsors’ visibility.

Chairperson of Carnival Calabar Florence ItaGiwa who was also at the AFTM noted that through Cross River State’s Carnival Calabar, Nigeria has found a place in the global social calendar”.

Giwa however noted that the numerous events featured at the carnival were significant. “In Cross River State, the dances during the carnival are not just ordinary dance but a dance laced with meanings and to send messages or educate people about specific issues like climate change, industrialisation, effects of coastal erosions and children amongst others.”
