• Reveals Why Award Snubs Once Made Him Cry, Why He Stopped Caring
Singer Kingsley Chinweike Okonkwo, well known as KCee, has said that been repeatedly overlooked by award bodies early in his career left him in tears, but the experience pushed him to stop seeking industry validation and focus on fan impact instead.
He made the revelation while speaking on the Afrobeats Intelligence Podcast. According to him, the lack of industry recognition during his formative years created moments of frustration and self-doubt. However, strong support from fans kept him motivated during that difficult period.
“I grew up in an industry that wasn’t fair to me. There wasn’t any attention given to me at any moment. I was doing a lot that the industry wasn’t recognising,” KCee said. “The fans were the ones who were behind me. I did a lot of work; they were not nominating me for awards. And I cried; I was pained.”
The Limpopo hit maker recalled that there were times he felt invisible within the music industry, even as he continued to release songs and perform consistently. The disappointment, he admitted, sometimes moved him to tears, but it also strengthened his resolve to keep pushing forward.
Born on April 18, KCee began his music journey in 1999 when he teamed up with his longtime partner and friend Precious John, popularly known as Presh, to form the dynamic duo KC Presh, and played as a duo for 12 years before parting ways in 2011 to pursue solo careers.
They met in a church choir, and gained national recognition after winning the Nigerian Breweries sponsored music talent show, Star Quest in 2002, a competition that showcased their talent to a broader audience.
Following their win, the duo enjoyed some success in the Nigerian music scene, releasing the albums Sio Nkpo (2006) and Get Ready (2010) and gaining a moderate following. Their work together as music partners gave them both some recognition until 2011 when they split, both chasing separate careers.
Rebranding to KCee, the Ajegunle-born launched his solo career, releasing Okpekete as his debut solo single. His career reached a major turning point in 2013 with the release of his hit single Limpopo.
The song elevated Uli, Anambra native to stardom, earning him several awards and nominations, specifically ‘Song of the Year’ at The Headies 2013. It achieved massive commercial success and marked a breakthrough moment after years of perseverance.
On September 19, 2013, KCee released the song Pullover featuring Wizkid. The official remix featuring Don Jazzy was released on October 31 the same year. The song shared the award for Hottest Single of the Year with Davido’s Aye at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards and its video won the award for ‘Most Gifted Duo/Group or Featuring’ at the 2014 Channel O Music Video Awards.
The song further debuted at No.9 on the MTV Base Official Top 10 chart for the week of 2 to 9 December 2013. It reached No.1 on the chart in week 24 January 2014, displacing D’banj’s Finally. It stayed on top for two weeks until it was knocked off the chart by Wizkid’s Jaiye Jaiye.
The milestone, KCee explained, changed his outlook on recognition within the Nigerian music industry. Rather than focusing on trophies or nominations, Ojapiano exponent said he now measures success by the impact of his music and the connection he builds with listener.
