MUSON, Mandilas thrill audience with Christmas concert
As part of activities celebrating this year’s Yuletide, the Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON) and Mandilas Group organised a Christmas concert on Sunday, December 3.
Held at the Shell/Zenith Bank Hall, MUSON Centre, Onikan, the concert, which had the MUSON Orchestra/Choir and the Mandilas Choir enlivened the hall notwithstanding the challenging periods.
With the Director of MUSON Choir, Sir Emeka Nwokedi, as conductor, the two choirs and orchestra captivated the audience with their diverse repertoire that included compositions of Joseph Martin, Lloyd Larson, John Rutter, Aderemi Olajide, and evergreen Christmas carols by Sam Ojukwu.
Artistes such as Oge Nweke, Stephen Nwosu, David Ihechukwu, Christian Onyeji and others, serenaded music aficionados and patrons alike to a spellbinding evening of symphonic harmony and vocal prowess. United in their dedication to musical excellence, they painted an enchanting musical canvas that transcended boundaries and enthralled the audience.
With renditions like Oh come o ye faithful, Little Town of Bethlehem, Keresimesi (an Igbo rendition) among others, the hall reverberated with the spirit of unity and joy, mirroring the enchantment shared by both performers and the spellbound audience, who sang along in some of the renditions.
Speaking on the Christmas Concert, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON), Mr. Louis Mbanefo (SAN), said it was not only to delight the audience, but to reinforce the organisation’s status as a beacon of musical brilliance in Nigeria.
“The Christmas Concert has been a yearly event since MUSON was founded 40 years ago. Every Christmas, we have our Christmas Concerts and this is one of the major events of the year. In the last few years, the Mandilas Group offered to sponsor these concerts, and part of this excitement is that a part of the Mandilas Group has a choir, which takes part in the concerts also. So that is how this has developed,” he said.
On her part, Mandilas, Sales and Marketing General Manager, Mrs. Marie Therese Phido, said, “this is a season of love, giving back to your community, showing it has been a good year and we are here to refresh and relax.”
The concert has become a highly anticipated yearly event, embodying the spirit of togetherness while also creating an opportunity for brand visibility, strengthening social bonds, and sharing in the festive joy with the community. “Beyond a sponsorship initiative, this collaboration reflects our dedication to corporate social responsibility, by contributing to the thriving cultural landscape,” Phido also said.
According to Sir Nwokedi, “from the reactions of people, I know that they enjoyed renditions tremendously. People looked forward to coming; as a matter of fact, we had to send some people who did not get tickets before back because the hall fill beyond capacity. That shows and tells you how popular the concert is.”
