In a music scene increasingly defined by experimentation and cross-pollination, gospel band, Ayokunle & The Ark, has returned with a bold artistic statement, a nine-track album titled Unspeakable, after the success of its 2012 album titled Friend, 2022 come back and the release of two singles, Oba Igbala and Hold On, in 2025.
The project arrives as a carefully crafted fusion of Spanish musical influences and indigenous Nigerian sounds, offering listeners a sonic experience that is both global in texture and deeply local in identity. The band leader, Ayokunle Shofu worked with vocalists Victoria Simon, Boluwaduro Adeseko, and Ogechi Amara-Sholadoye, alongside five other artistes.
A hybrid of diverse musical expressions, the music project, which took approximately six months to complete was produced by Johnson Oluwajuwon, popularly known as Creativemyind. Shofu described it as a significant return to music after a lengthy hiatus and a total package that contains more indigenous elements than any of his previous works.
In one of the tracks, Shofu experimented with Spanish, thus expanding the project’s sonic diversity. He noted that Unspeakable is a deeply personal journey that reflects his spiritual encounters and growth, emphasizing that it’s a project beyond words for him, not just because of the quality of the music and lyrical lushness, but because of the lessons God taught him along the journey.
More than just another album release, the project signals a creative evolution for the ensemble, positioning them firmly within the growing movement of Nigerian artistes redefining the boundaries of contemporary African music.
The album invites listeners to reflect on the encounter of the love of the father, a message that goes beyond mere expression. “There is something for everyone on the album. You need to experience it,” Shofu declares.
Commenting on the inspiration behind the album’s title, the band leader said it reflects realities that transcend human language. “The wonders of the cross, the power in the blood, practical Christian living, they are beyond words. The successful delivery of this project is beyond words too,” he said.
Asked about the challenges encountered during the making of the project, Shofu admitted that financing the project was one of the biggest challenges. “It took some time for me to decide on the friends I featured, and I had to trust God all through the process for financial resources. It cost quite a lot,” he revealed.
As part of the album rollout, Ayokunle & The Ark staged a live concert on Saturday, March 22, at the Redeem Christian Church of God (RCCG) Rose of Sharon Parish, Ikeja, where attendees experienced live renditions from the project.
Hinting on the next project and what inspires his music, Shofu said: “My next project will likely feature me more as a songwriter/lyricist and composer than as a singer. My relationship with God, people, His creation and life inspire me.
“All of the songs are personal to me and very tasking too. Writing the songs was based on inspiration. However, I worked with quite a number of individuals to bring the project to light. It costs a lot to work with professionals.”
