At Culture Day, Westmill Students Preach Unity

Westmill-1IT was cheers all through recently, as Westmills British School, located in Apapa, moved to lift culture with one in a kind celebration of the African heritage. The event also aimed at promoting unity among pupils.

Held at the Rockview Hotel, Apapa, the cultural day celebrations attracted personalities from all walks of life. The high point of the occasion was the presentation of stage drama by the pupils.

Titled, Remove the Scales, the play looks at the clash between two cultural practices with strong emphasis on how to live, work and come together despite cultural differences.

Westmill-2Other activities include, poem recitation, bata dance, Calabar dance, Indian dance and award presentation.According to the Head of School/Administrator, Mrs. Atinuke Aluko, the motive is to encourage youths to embrace Nigerian culture and make foreigners also see beauty in the county’s culture.

“If you want to develop your child, encourage him or her to participate in extra-curricula activities. The best universities are not looking at the academic performance only, but also extra curriculum, what you do outside academics and do well that is
why we make extra-curriculum activities compulsory.”

A student of Westmills, Yusuf Raj, an India national, said, “with a lot of teamwork and practice, we were able to put up a wonderful performance, I like everything in the Nigeria culture.”

One of the parents, Diana Sofindin, said, “my daughter’s performance today was fantastic; I was surprised to see her dance bata and take part in the performance on stage. I was born and brought up in Lagos and I love the culture.”
