ONDO State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko has implored youths and students to become solution providers, rather than problem creators, as a way of providing structural, ideological and sustainable remedies to the present social, political and economic challenges facing the country.
The Governor spoke through the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Aderotimi Adelola, while playing host to youths and student leaders yesterday in Akure. He urged them to provide a platform for brainstorming and discussing national issues.
Mimiko noted that youths can assist in changing existing trends through progressive, productive and resourceful contributions, adding that youths need to put an end to the stereotype ways of doing things.
He maintained that solution to existing problems lie in the hands of the youths and urged them to contribute to nation building through diligent and constructive brainstorming in the most articulate manner.
Decrying the present situation in Nigeria, he lamented the structure put in place, where larger size of the revenue goes to the federal government at the expense of the state and local governments with larger commitments to the citizen. He therefore
appealed to the federal government to review existing laws to enable other arms of the government have very reasonable allocations in the available resources, stressing that youths should devise templates for generations unborn by shunning protests but embrace the use of intellectual powers to re-direct the nation.
The youths and students were also urged to be united in order to enhance their productivity, participate in debates on national and international policies, sponsor bills and revive students’ unionism to what it used to be in the 60s.
Responding on behalf of the youths, the state President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Alhaji Waheed Fadola, appreciated the support received from the state government, stressing that the forum provides an opportunity for the youths to contribute to national development.
He promised that the youths will remain calm and cooperative with government policies and programmes, and thanked the governor for including a reasonable number of youths in his administration.
