New book exposes audit limitations, advocates forensic approach to financial integrity

Associate Professor of Forensic Accounting and Fraud Management Studies at ICT University, Cameroon, Dr Kennedy Iwundu, has unveiled a new book titled Forensic Accounting and Fraud Examination, a timely contribution to the fight against financial crimes and institutional corruption.

The book was formally presented to the President of the Chartered Institute of Forensic and Certified Fraud Investigators of Nigeria (CIFFIN) on Tuesday, 30 July 2025, during the Institute’s induction ceremony held in Abuja.

Dr Iwundu’s latest publication tackles head-on the persistent shortcomings of conventional audits in detecting fraud. He argues that traditional independent and statutory audits have become increasingly inadequate in the face of sophisticated financial malfeasance, thereby reinforcing the need for the institutional adoption of forensic audits across both public and private sectors.

Speaking at the event, the academic challenged governments at all levels to embrace forensic auditing as a central mechanism for promoting financial accountability, transparency, and public trust.

He noted that with the Federal Government projecting higher tax revenues from 2026—driven by recently introduced tax legislation—the public has a right to demand measurable transparency in the use of such funds. Dr Iwundu warned that any failure to demonstrate this accountability could severely damage the social contract between the government and the citizenry.

“Accountability must match ambition,” he said. “A surge in tax revenue, without a commensurate commitment to transparency, invites mistrust. Forensic audits should be a policy imperative, not an afterthought.”

Forensic Accounting and Fraud Examination is positioned to become a cornerstone text for financial professionals, government auditors, academics, and students. The book provides a robust framework for identifying, investigating, and preventing fraudulent financial activity through practical methodologies and evidence-based strategies.

Dr Iwundu is a recognised authority in the field, holding fellowships with the Association of Forensic Accounting Researchers (AFAR), the Association of Forensic and Investigative Auditors (AFIA), the Certified Fraud Examiners (CFE), and CIFFIN.

His work, according to CIFFIN officials, “represents a valuable addition to the growing body of scholarship aimed at reforming Nigeria’s financial systems and promoting a culture of integrity.”
