Special Focus on 100 Top Strategic CEOs of Nigeria’s Most Transformative Companies in 2025

Dr. Abiola Agunbiade, CEO, AEC Group

The Next Chapter of Excellence: How Dr. Abiola Agunbiade is Scaling the AEC Group Legacy

As Nigeria enters a pivotal era of infrastructure renewal, the 2025 edition of The Guardian Nigeria’s Top 100 Strategic CEOs shines a spotlight on the leaders redefining the nation’s corporate and physical landscape. Among these transformative figures is Dr. Abiola Agunbiade, the Chief Executive Officer of AEC Group, whose visionary approach to civil engineering and transport economics is setting a new benchmark for national development.

Dr. Agunbiade represents a unique breed of leadership that blends rigorous academic excellence with global industry experience and a deep-seated commitment to Nigerian progress. Holding a PhD in Transport Economics from Newcastle University and multiple degrees from the University of Salford, his academic foundation is anchored in a framework for transport investment appraisal specifically tailored for developing economies. Before returning to Nigeria to steer the AEC Group, he honed his expertise at SYSTRA UK, where he contributed to the Northern Powerhouse Regional Model for Highways England, an experience that embedded the methodological rigour and global perspective now synonymous with his leadership.

The story of AEC Group is one of legacy and evolution. Founded in 1990 by his father, the distinguished civil engineer Dr. Peter Olaleye Agunbiade, the firm established a reputation for quality and institutional integrity. Dr. Abiola Agunbiade did not simply inherit his position; he earned it through nearly a decade of direct involvement, rising from a Transport Planner to Executive Director, and finally assuming the role of Chief Executive Officer in July 2024. This journey was defined by a serving spirit, as he learned the intricacies of the office from long-standing employees and proved his mettle on complex, high-profile projects.

Under his strategic direction, the firm underwent a significant transformation between 2021 and 2022, restructuring from a standalone entity into the AEC Group. This decentralisation was designed to foster specialist leadership and allow the company to serve the full infrastructure value chain. Today, the group is a diversified family of seven (7) specialised entities: Advanced Engineering Consultants, SPOAK, Advanced Survey & UAV, Advanced Mobility and Transport, ACEE Climate Consultants, Advanced Capital, and Ink Visuals. This synergy allows the firm to take projects from concept to completion entirely within its own capability.

Together as AEC Group, they offer multidisciplinary consultancy and technical services for infrastructural development, encompassing: Engineering Design (Feasibility, Conceptual, Preliminary, and Detailed); Project Transaction Advisory Services (EPCS, EPC+F, PPP, and Capital Projects); Quantity Surveying, Cost Estimation, and Engineering Valuation; Urban and Strategic Transportation Planning and Mobility Solutions; Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) Studies; Geomatics and Land Surveying Services; Technical Validation and Specialized Services (Geotechnical Surveys, Materials Testing, Modeling, Integrity Assessments, Quality Assurance, and Integrity Evaluation Services); and Infrastructural Visualization Services.

Dr. Agunbiade’s impact is visible in the very fabric of Nigeria’s urban centers. As one of only a few transport modellers in Nigeria with full simulation capability, he has been instrumental in easing traffic congestion across Lagos State. His firm was responsible for the redesign and removal of roundabouts at Lekki Phase 1, Allen Avenue, and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, as well as the design of the Opebi-Ojota Link Bridge. Furthermore, AEC Group has led the design and modelling for some of the country’s most ambitious projects, including the Fourth Mainland Bridge, the Lagos-Abuja Highway, and the Oshodi-Ikorodu Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

A hallmark of Dr. Agunbiade’s leadership is his unwavering commitment to technology. He views technology not as an optional upgrade but as a core competitive requirement. AEC Group has been at the forefront of the industry, adopting BIM (Building Information Modelling) collaboration tools, PTV VISSIM for traffic simulation, and Artificial Intelligence for project development and proposal writing. The firm was also among the first in Nigeria to integrate drone technology for topographic and geotechnical surveys, ensuring that their work remains at the global frontier of engineering practice.

Beyond technical prowess, Dr. Agunbiade champions a human-centred corporate culture. He maintains an open-door policy, believing that a harmonious, family-like environment is essential for delivery and efficiency. This philosophy extends to the welfare of his staff; during periods of economic volatility, such as naira devaluation or fuel price hikes, he has prioritised easing the burden on his employees. His leadership is also anchored in uncompromising ethics, a value instilled by his father. Guided by the belief that a company’s name is more valuable than gold, he maintains a strict boundary against compromising reputation for profit.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Agunbiade is a vocal advocate for the transformative power of infrastructure. He argues that projects like a standard-gauge rail link between Lagos and Abuja or the Coastal Road are not just about movement; they restructure economic geography, relieve urban overpopulation, and raise living standards. His vision for AEC Group is equally ambitious: to establish the firm as the leading engineering consultancy across West Africa, bringing Nigerian technical excellence to a continental stage.

To emerging engineers, his guidance is clear: “You need to serve before you can lead”. He encourages the next generation to embrace lifelong learning, master new software, and believe in their ability to drive change. As Dr. Abiola Agunbiade leads AEC Group into its next chapter, his blend of legacy, innovation, and nationalistic passion continues to shape the future of Nigeria’s infrastructure, one project at a time. For him, sustainability is the ultimate goal, achieving today’s aims without hindering the generations of tomorrow.
