In this special report, Uzo Oshogwe shares her insights on the roles of women in society, affirmative action, and the position of Transcorp Hotels Plc…Excerpts.

What are some of the most significant milestones in your professional journey, and how have they prepared you for your current role as CEO of Transcorp Hotels Plc?

One of the most defining milestones in my career was transitioning from real estate development, investment and management into the hospitality sector. My time at Afriland properties plc and UBA Properties gave me a strong foundation in investment development and asset optimisation. However, joining the Transcorp Group marked a turning point. As Managing Director of Afriland Properties Plc, I led transformative projects that prioritised innovation, cost-efficiency, and long-term value creation.

That experience sharpened my strategic thinking, stakeholder management, and operational leadership skills, critical qualities that I have brought into my current role as MD/CEO of Transcorp Hotels Plc. Leading a hospitality brand of this magnitude requires more than just operational expertise; it demands vision, resilience, and an ability to lead people through constant change. All of which I have developed through every stage of my journey.

What drives your passion and motivation, and how has it contributed to your success in your career?

I am driven by the desire to create value that outlives me. Whether it is transforming spaces, building people, or shaping narratives, I find purpose in knowing that what I do contributes to the broader economic and human development story of Nigeria. This passion for excellence and impact has shaped my leadership style: one that is intentional, inclusive, and performance-driven. I do not just want to meet expectations; I aim to exceed them and that mindset has helped me consistently lead teams that deliver results and set new industry benchmarks.

How would you assess the implementation of affirmative action policies in Nigeria?

Affirmative action in Nigeria has seen some progress, particularly in terms of representation in public discourse and boardroom conversations. However, implementation remains inconsistent. It is not just about putting women in positions, it is about giving them the authority, tools, and support systems to lead effectively. For policies to be truly impactful, they must be accompanied by structural changes: flexible work environments, mentorship pipelines, equitable access to opportunities, and deliberate efforts to tackle unconscious bias. There is still work to be done, but I believe the awareness is growing, and with the right political will, and a change of mindset of our citizens, we can accelerate meaningful change.

What trends do you foresee shaping the hospitality industry in Nigeria, and how is Transcorp Hotels Plc positioned to take advantage of these trends?

Technology, sustainability, and experience-led travel are the future of hospitality. Guests are looking for seamless digital experiences, from booking, check-in to check-out. At Transcorp Hotels Plc, we have invested in contactless technology, revamped our digital platforms, and introduced loyalty schemes that personalise the guest journey. Sustainability is another key trend. Guests are more conscious of environmental impact, and we are integrating green practices into our operations. Lastly, the demand for local and culturally immersive experiences is rising. Through our innovative offerings and commitment to authentic Nigerian hospitality, we are redefining what it means to host with purpose. Our new Transcorp Centre, a 5,000-capacity event space is also positioning us as a top destination for global conferences and events in West Africa.

What challenges do you think hinder the progress of women ascending to leadership positions, including the presidency?

Structural and societal barriers remain a significant hindrance. Many women still face the burden of proving they are “enough”. Enough to lead, enough to be heard, and enough to succeed. There is also a persistent lack of access to networks, mentorship, and funding opportunities that many male counterparts benefit from. On a cultural level, we need to dismantle stereotypes and redefine what leadership looks like. Leadership is not about gender, it is about competence, vision, and the courage to serve. To move forward, we need to build systems that level the playing field and create environments where women can lead confidently and authentically.

How do you balance your personal and professional responsibilities, including managing your home, office, and social commitments?

Balance, for me, is about being present and intentional. I do not believe in a perfect work-life balance, but I do believe in prioritization. I have learned to delegate, trust my team, and create boundaries that protect my time and energy. I also make time for the things that keep me grounded; family, faith, and wellness. Leading a business of this scale can be demanding, but I am reminded daily that I cannot pour from an empty cup. I am fortunate to have a strong support system, both at home and at work, that allows me to show up fully in every space.

What advice would you give to young women aspiring to leadership positions in Nigeria’s corporate and public sector?

Own your story. Do not wait to be invited to the table, bring your own chair if you must. Be excellent at what you do, stay curious, and never stop learning. Also, understand that leadership is not about titles; it is about service, influence, and impact. Build your competence, but also build your character. Surround yourself with mentors and peers who challenge and inspire you. And most importantly, do not be afraid to fail or afraid to be different. Every setback is a setup for growth. Nigeria needs bold, brilliant women who are not only ready to lead but are also ready to transform the system for those coming behind them.

Aisha Salisu: Leading with Integrity and Driving Sustainable Growth at March Energy

Aisha Salisu, Managing Director and CEO, March Energy Limited

In the challenging yet opportunity-rich environment of Nigeria’s energy industry, March Energy Limited is embarking on a period of significant growth and strategic transformation, guided by the dynamic leadership of its Managing Director and CEO, Aisha Salisu. With over fifteen years of diverse experience, Salisu’s journey reflects a deep commitment to addressing Africa’s energy challenges and reshaping the industry’s future. Her unique background, spanning finance, policy, operations, and international engagement, positions her to tackle the complexities of Nigeria’s energy needs from multiple perspectives.

Her professional path began in Nigeria’s banking and financial sector, where she gained a crucial understanding of energy financing and investment strategies, notably being introduced to the oil space by a former boss. This financial foundation, combined with a Master’s degree in Oil and Gas from the University of East London and studies at Oxford University Said Business School, underpins her strategic capabilities. Her educational background in political science and public administration has also been invaluable in navigating the policy environment shaping the industry. Actively contributing to global forums on Africa’s energy transition, women’s leadership, and inclusive growth further highlights her dedication to broader industry progress.

What truly drives Aisha Salisu is confronting Nigeria’s energy paradox – the striking contrast between being resource-rich (a top oil producer in Africa and globally) and yet energy-deficient. She sees this not as an insurmountable problem, but a solvable one, particularly recognising the disproportionate burden this crisis places on women and children. As a woman from Northern Nigeria working in oil and gas, a region where few women are in this field, Salisu feels a profound personal connection and responsibility, aware that her presence serves as an example for young women.

A key motivation for Salisu is a desire to rewrite the narrative of leadership in the energy sector, aiming to expand who holds a seat at the table and create more inclusive pathways for others. Being from a conservative part of Northern Nigeria presents unique challenges but also provides a much-needed perspective in leadership….

She emphasizes that oil and gas should be viewed not merely as a commodity, but as a transformative resource capable of generating significant multiplier effects across the entire economy. Her success, she believes, stems from understanding this bigger picture, combining her diverse skills to look beyond simple transactions toward real economic transformation.

Under her leadership, March Energy has undergone a significant strategic repositioning. The company has shifted from being a passive asset holder to a performance-driven operator, strategically expanding its operations across the entire value chain – from downstream to midstream trading and upstream operations. This involved reengineering approaches to field development, stakeholder engagement, and capital efficiency.

The core strategy has focused on three key areas: unlocking value from underutilized assets, strengthening operational partnerships, and tightening project execution timelines. These initiatives have yielded tangible results, including improved project margins, increased investor confidence, and better risk-adjusted returns.

Addressing the state of women’s representation in leadership, Salisu is direct, calling it inadequate and a “glaring” imbalance. While acknowledging the systemic barriers that make it difficult for women to access leadership positions, she also calls on women to be proactive in establishing their own networks, much like men do. She suggests that being the “first” or “only” woman should not be a badge of honour; instead, the focus should be on increasing the overall number of capable women in leadership.

Crucially, Salisu highlights the vital role of male allies. She notes that systems are structured in a way that often requires men, who predominantly occupy decision-making spaces, to identify, amplify, and advocate for competent and dynamic women to create opportunities for them. For society to thrive, she asserts, strong representation of great women in leadership is essential.

At March Energy, Salisu’s presence as a woman from Northern Nigeria serves as a powerful embodiment of the company’s commitment to inclusivity. She is acutely aware that young women are watching her navigate this space, and this awareness fuels her daily pursuit of excellence. While being a Northern Nigerian woman in this industry presents unique dynamics and challenges, including having to consistently demonstrate capabilities at a higher standard due to intersectional barriers, she leverages this distinction as a platform for change.

Her position carries a profound responsibility, serving as tangible proof to young girls that they too can excel in these spaces. March Energy has institutionalised its commitment through regular in-house career development sessions specifically for women in energy and strategic partnerships with external programs supporting female talent in STEM and engineering.

Corporate integrity is a cornerstone value at March Energy, and Salisu attributes this commitment to her personal values, deeply embedded since childhood by her father. His watchwords – “be the best at what you do” and the non-negotiable principles of integrity and no room for mediocrity – guide her leadership.

For Salisu, excellence brings internal pride and confidence. By modeling these values at March Energy, ensuring integrity is non-negotiable and mediocrity is unacceptable, the company has built long-term sustainability, a strong reputation, and deep trust with stakeholders, investors, and partners.

Looking ahead, her biggest priority for March Energy over the next five years centers on Africa’s energy transition. She advocates for a transitional plan tailored to the African landscape, one that doesn’t necessitate burying hydrocarbons but focuses on more sustainable extraction methods. This approach is seen as creating tremendous opportunities for young people and technology advancement, boosting the economy and creating jobs.

She believes there is a fundamental misunderstanding of the oil and gas industry, highlighting its wide-ranging applications beyond just fuel, from roads and clothing to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. The strategy includes leveraging AI technology in production, security, and financing to address key challenges in the African energy space. Salisu is optimistic that these solutions are achievable in our lifetime.

Nnenna Maduabum: Reshaping Nigeria’s Energy Landscape, Empowering People, Driving Impact

Nnenna Maduabum, Managing Director, Numad Energy Integrated Services Limited

As the Managing Director of Numad Energy Integrated Services Limited, a multimillion-dollar oil and gas services company, Nnenna Maduabum’s journey is one rooted in purpose– the drive to build systems, empower people, and leave a lasting legacy through service. Her background is steeped in the upstream oil and gas sector, having worked with industry giants associated with International Oil Companies.

This experience, combined with her academic foundation (BSc, MCIPS, Advanced Management in Business Analytics from the University of Cambridge) and principles of resilience, integrity, and excellence learned from a values-driven upbringing, shapes the way she leads today. Her professional motivation is deeply tied to this sense of purpose, and her efforts have been recognized, including being named “The Oil and Gas Influencer” by CEO Weekly for her impactful presence, strategic innovation, and role in championing women’s leadership.

Nnenna is also a Certified Member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS UK), holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing management, and is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).

At Numad Energy, Nnenna Maduabum has strived to distinguish the company through a people-first culture, systemized delivery, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. The company views its work as more than just delivering projects; it’s about building trust through operational ethics grounded in transparency, proactive risk management, and ethical leadership.

To ensure exceptionally high standards, she has overseen the institutionalization of a quality culture through standardized processes, stringent documentation practices, continuous team training, and collaboration with experienced partners. For Numad Energy, quality control begins not at execution but with strategy, culminating in client satisfaction, and they adopt an adaptive feedback loop to continuously improve with every project.

To drive growth and expansion, she implemented a lean but agile operational model that empowers each department with clarity, ownership, and measurable performance indicators. Key strategic decisions under her leadership included prioritizing local capacity building, forging exclusive international technical partnerships, and investing in compliance-driven systems.

A significant evolution she led was the transition from a purely service-based model to one that integrates engineering, procurement, construction, and innovation. These initiatives have fundamentally increased the company’s competitiveness, enabling them to win key contracts with multinationals.

The tangible impact of these strategies has been a solid growth trajectory, a healthy balance sheet, improved client confidence, and a remarkable 3x increase in project volume within the first two years of full operation. Her success is significantly attributed to clarity of vision, disciplined execution, and surrounding herself with a capable, value-aligned team and partnerships.

Leading effectively in a male-dominated sector requires more than just business acumen; it requires breaking barriers. Nnenna Maduabum is a dynamic entrepreneur and trailblazing business leader, and is proud that Numad Energy was one of the first Nigerian female-owned companies to exhibit at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston.

Beyond this, she believes women play a vital role as Nigeria’s silent economic backbone, driving consumption, innovation, and workforce stability. This belief fuels her commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion at Numad Energy. Numad Energy doesn’t just discuss inclusion; they actively practice it through a meritocratic structure that identifies, trains, and promotes competent women across all operational bands.

Her goal is to reshape the narrative around women in Oil & Gas by placing them in core technical and managerial roles. She also mentors young women outside the company through structured leadership circles and career coaching, and internally, Numad Energy runs cross-functional development programs exposing women to non-traditional roles like engineering, QHSSE, and field supervision.

While women are present in leadership, Nnenna Maduabum notes that they are not yet equally represented at the decision-making table. This imbalance, she believes, stems from structural, cultural, and policy-related barriers. At Numad Energy, she leads by example by creating systems where power is accessible to more women, encouraging them to step up and take charge.

She advocates for gender-intentional policies that enable women-owned businesses to participate in major capital projects, access to capital, and technical skill-based leadership programs to further leverage women’s potential, particularly in sectors like energy, tech, and infrastructure.

“We must spotlight and scale female-founded businesses, not just in soft sectors but in energy, tech, and infrastructure. When women lead, communities stabilize, and economies grow. The multiplier effect of investing in women is not a theory — it’s proven economics”.

Through her leadership, Nnenna Maduabum has established Numad Energy Integrated Services Limited as a company that embodies strategic innovation, ethical operations, proven growth, and a profound commitment to fostering talent and diversity in the energy sector…, paving a path towards a stronger, more inclusive future. She is also the founder of Numad Technology (Nigeria & USA) and Numad Foods Limited, as well as Life Friends, an intergenerational social platform.

Ese Onemiye, Founder and CEO, Silver Cross Healthcare & Diagnostics

Ese Onemiye is a distinguished healthcare executive and visionary leader with a comprehensive background in public health, clinical research, and project management. Her leadership is significantly informed by a global perspective, cultivated through supporting numerous clinical research and drug development programs in the United States alongside prominent pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical companies.

Her expertise in clinical trials, regulatory compliance, and patient safety strategies enhances her strategic direction in healthcare innovation and delivery. She is recognised for her substantive contributions to hospital restructuring, strategic healthcare planning, and the establishment of resilient clinical systems, positioning her as a catalyst for transformative change within the sector.

As the Founder and CEO of Silver Cross Healthcare & Diagnostics, a multi-specialty hospital located in Abuja, Nigeria, Ese is pioneering innovative models of care. The establishment of Silver Cross Healthcare was personally inspired by the loss of an uncle to kidney disease and the observed difficulties in accessing vital services such as dialysis treatment. This experience underscored critical gaps in healthcare accessibility across Nigeria, particularly concerning the timely provision of life-saving services like hemodialysis.

Her motivation is rooted in a commitment to build a healthcare system that prioritises accessibility and is intentionally designed to address the unique needs of every patient. Founding Silver Cross Healthcare represents her response to a system where inefficiencies regrettably result in loss of life.

Her goal is to develop sustainable, community-driven healthcare solutions that empower people, particularly in underserved areas, using entrepreneurship as a path to innovate, lead change, and make healthcare truly inclusive and impactful across Nigeria.

Under Ese’s leadership, Silver Cross Healthcare focuses on accessibility, reliability, and patient-centered care, particularly in nephrology and chronic disease management. The organisation consistently demonstrates a forward-thinking approach, blending innovation with operational excellence to address critical gaps in reliable healthcare access.

Strategic initiatives instrumental in the hospital’s growth include integrating digital health solutions to improve diagnostic accuracy, streamline patient management, and enhance the overall patient care experience.

The organisation is also preparing to launch an innovative, sustainable healthcare solution leveraging technology to transform how critical care services are delivered to underserved communities, specifically aiming to bridge the gap in access to dialysis treatments through locally driven, technology-enabled models. Silver Cross Healthcare is committed to continuous growth not only in size but also in the quality of care delivered.

What sets Silver Cross Healthcare apart is its intentionally patient-focused approach, where care extends beyond treatment to truly understand and support each individual. The team is passionate about improving patients’ quality of life and believes in a holistic approach to health and wellness that supports both physical healing and emotional well-being.

This is combined with medical excellence, compassionate care, and innovative, sustainable healthcare solutions. To ensure consistently high standards, the organisation works to exceed expectations through ongoing clinical training, robust quality assurance systems, and a strong commitment to evidence-based practices. Patient and family feedback is highly valued and used to refine services. Silver Cross Healthcare holds itself to high ethical standards, always prioritising quality, respect, and long-term wellness, and never losing sight of the human side of healing.

Building on her mission to expand healthcare access and equity, Ese is also a Trustee of the Silver Cross Living Well Empowerment Foundation. This foundation advocates for the mental health and well-being of family caregivers, especially women, who are often the unsung heroes behind Nigeria’s chronic care system and the overlooked pillars in a patient’s journey.

The Foundation offers support through counseling, support networks, family wellness resources, and training programs, ensuring caregivers are seen, supported, and empowered. The belief is that healthcare should extend beyond treating the patient to care for the wellness of the entire family.

She is also a champion for gender equity in leadership and decision-making across the healthcare sector, deeply committed to bridging the gender gap for women in healthcare. Drawing on insights from the 2024 Making More Health Convention, she highlights Zubaida Bai’s perspective that “the world’s most significant untapped capital is neither oil nor data, but women”.

In Nigeria, women play a vital role in both formal and informal economies, making significant contributions to sectors such as entrepreneurship, healthcare, agriculture, and education. Ese believes that empowering women is not merely an act of charity but a strategic investment and that addressing systemic barriers like access to finance, mentorship, and inclusive policies is essential to fully harness their potential.

Investing in women yields exponential returns, driving generational change and fostering sustainable economic growth.
Breaking down barriers benefits everyone, leading to stronger families, businesses, and communities, and creating a more resilient and inclusive economy by ensuring no one is left behind.

Ese’s professional passion is driven by the belief that through strategic implementation of innovation and compassionate care, they can truly change lives, aiming to build a healthcare system in Nigeria where everyone has a fair chance at receiving the care they need. Her success is attributed to resilience, staying true to her values of excellence and integrity, and having an incredible team.

As a woman in leadership, Ese has navigated challenges such as gender bias and the skepticism often surrounding women in leadership positions by repeatedly proving her expertise, asserting her leadership, and challenging expectations. She has learned to lead with results, stay grounded in her purpose, and build strong networks. Remaining committed to continuous learning and growth has allowed her to overcome barriers and steadily expand her impact.

Ese Onemiye continues to contribute towards shaping the future of healthcare in Nigeria. Through her leadership, driven by the belief that collaboration drives impact, Silver Cross Healthcare continues to push boundaries, setting a new standard for compassionate and equitable healthcare and shaping a more inclusive and resilient healthcare future in Nigeria and beyond.

Dr. Vera Uzoamaka Oberabor: An Influential Force Reshaping Nigeria’s Real Estate Sector

Dr. Vera Uzoamaka Oberabor, Executive Director, PWAN Premium

In the dynamic and vital sector of Nigerian real estate, where the dream of home ownership holds profound significance for millions, trailblazing leadership and innovative strategies are paramount. This feature delves into the impactful journey of Dr. Vera Uzoamaka Oberabor, a distinguished corporate leader and scholar, and her pivotal role in transforming Nigeria’s real estate landscape through her work at PWAN Premium.

As an Executive Director at PWAN Premium and holding key positions within the broader PWAN Group—serving as Group Executive Director of Events and Chairman of the Group’s Global Mission—Dr. Oberabor has earned acclaim as one of the most influential figures in the industry. This exploration draws insights from her entrepreneurial path, the strategic approaches employed by PWAN Premium to tackle Nigeria’s housing needs, and the company’s broader impact on reshaping the sector.

Dr. Oberabor’s journey with PWAN Premium is a testament to the power of vision and determination. PWAN Premium operates as a major player in Nigeria’s real estate network marketing industry and is an affiliate of PWAN Homes.

According to Dr. Oberabor, achieving success in any field, particularly in the competitive real estate sector, requires a strong foundation built upon confidence in God, self-belief, and determination. Furthermore, she emphasises the indispensable role of mentorship and leadership in fostering growth and success.

Her own transformative journey within PWAN began with a “divine meeting” with the co-founders of the PWAN Group, with particular note given to Dr. Jayne Onwumere, the current President of the Group. It was under Dr. Onwumere’s mentorship that Dr. Oberabor evolved significantly, progressing from a novice in the business to becoming a leader herself.

This mentorship highlights a core value within the PWAN structure – the nurturing and development of individuals to achieve their potential. Dr. Oberabor attests that Dr. Onwumere’s leadership has served as a source of inspiration for her own growth and for the growth of countless others within the organisation.

Joining PWAN 13 years ago, Dr. Oberabor states that she has “never looked back”. Over this significant period, she has had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the profound impact of the unique network marketing model introduced by PWAN to the real estate sector.

She has observed ordinary Nigerians, both within the country and abroad, transition from states of despair, poverty, and hopelessness into lives marked by dignity and empowerment. This demonstrates the powerful social and economic impact of the PWAN model beyond mere property transactions.

The company, PWAN Premium Realtors & Concerns Ltd, has experienced remarkable growth since its inception. Starting with an initial team of just five individuals, it has expanded to include over 22 staff members. This growth in personnel has been mirrored by a rapid expansion in operations, moving beyond its initial base in Lagos to establish a presence in numerous other Nigerian cities, including Ibadan, Calabar, Uyo, Warri, Port Harcourt, Abuja, and Asaba.

This geographical expansion underscores the company’s increasing reach and influence across Nigeria.
One of the proudest achievements highlighted by Dr. Oberabor is the company’s ability to transform bare land into thriving housing communities. This capability speaks to PWAN Premium’s commitment to tangible development and contributing to Nigeria’s housing stock. The vision driving PWAN Premium is clearly articulated: “Making Home Ownership Dreams a Reality for All”.

This vision is underpinned by practical empowerment initiatives launched by the company. These initiatives have been instrumental in creating opportunities that have not only removed many individuals from the traditional labour market but have also effectively broken cycles of poverty for numerous Nigerians. This reinforces the idea that PWAN Premium’s work extends beyond real estate development to include significant socio-economic upliftment5.

Perhaps the most significant milestone for PWAN Premium is its role in helping to position the entire PWAN brand as a leading force within Nigeria’s real estate sector. PWAN Premium has acted as a pioneer, paving the way for the creation of new affiliate companies within the group. Examples of these successful offshoots include PWAN Platinum, PWAN Posh, PWAN Property Solutions, and PWAN Poise, with the expectation that more will follow.

This demonstrates PWAN Premium’s foundational strength and its ability to incubate further growth and specialization within the broader PWAN ecosystem. Another cherished achievement is the company’s success in selling properties to a wide range of clients and, importantly, the allocation and development of over 80% of their projects. This latter point is particularly significant given the challenging real estate landscape in Nigeria.

Navigating Nigeria’s real estate sector is not without its complexities and challenges. Dr. Oberabor openly discusses several key bottlenecks and difficulties the company has faced. Market competition is a significant factor, requiring PWAN Premium to constantly differentiate itself from established players through innovation. Funding poses another challenge, particularly in securing necessary capital amid economic fluctuations that affect the market.

Regulatory compliance demands meticulous attention due to the complex legal landscape governing real estate in Nigeria. Market adaptation is continuously required to adjust strategies in response to shifting market trends, a necessity highlighted by the need to navigate the impacts of global events such as the pandemic. Finally, land disputes, often arising from complex traditional land tenure laws and regulatory inconsistencies, present ongoing management challenges.

Despite these hurdles, PWAN Premium remains deeply committed to addressing Nigeria’s pressing need for affordable housing. The company employs several innovative strategies to tackle the affordable housing crisis. One crucial approach involves offering flexible payment plans, specifically installment-based options. These plans are designed to ease the financial burden associated with homeownership, thereby opening the market to a broader demographic of potential buyers who might otherwise be priced out.

Embracing technology is another cornerstone of PWAN Premium’s innovation. By utilizing online listings and digital marketing platforms, the company significantly enhances its reach to potential clients and improves the overall customer experience. This digital integration is crucial for efficiency and accessibility in the modern market.

The real estate network marketing model itself is a key innovation. By introducing this model to the real estate sector, PWAN Premium empowers individuals to become real estate entrepreneurs. This allows them to earn commissions and build wealth, creating a decentralized sales force and providing economic opportunities.

Coupled with this model are robust empowerment and training programs. PWAN Premium provides extensive training and mentorship to help individuals develop the skills and knowledge needed to succeed and find their niche in the real estate market. This investment in human capital is integral to the network marketing model’s success.

Through the cumulative effect of these initiatives—flexible payment plans, technology adoption, network marketing, and comprehensive training—PWAN Premium is actively driving accessibility, affordability, and empowerment within Nigeria’s real estate space9. These strategies directly contribute to making the dream of homeownership attainable for more Nigerians.

In response to Nigeria’s recent economic realities, including economic reforms and subsidy removal, PWAN Premium has demonstrated resilience and adaptability. The company has implemented cost-cutting measures and optimized operations to maintain efficiency. Furthermore, they have enhanced their digital platforms.

Diversifying service offerings and strengthening strategic partnerships have also been critical components of their adaptation strategy. A vital part of this ongoing adaptation is the continuous investment in staff training and technological innovation, ensuring the company remains competitive and highly responsive to evolving market changes.

Trust and transparency are foundational pillars for PWAN Premium, particularly crucial in a market that can sometimes be perceived as complex. The company employs specific strategies to foster these values. Clear communication is paramount, involving regular project updates and proactive engagement with clients. Transparent pricing ensures full disclosure of all fees and transaction details, removing ambiguity.

Due diligence is meticulously conducted, involving comprehensive property verification and documentation to protect clients’ interests. An active client feedback loop is maintained to inform continuous improvement based on customer experiences. Finally, strict regulatory compliance is upheld, adhering to all legal and ethical standards. By diligently upholding these values, PWAN Premium successfully fosters long-term relationships built on integrity and professionalism with its clients.

Looking at the post-COVID era, Dr. Oberabor identifies the most impactful innovation implemented by PWAN Premium. This innovation is the integration of smart home technology, combined with flexible payment plans and comprehensive digital solutions.

This combination represents a significant step forward in modernizing their offerings and client engagement. Smart Home Features, such as energy-efficient appliances, smart security systems, and automation, are incorporated to enhance the lifestyle appeal and marketability of properties.

As previously mentioned, Flexible Payment Plans remain critical, offering customizable payment structures that help buyers navigate financial uncertainty in the current economic climate. Digital Solutions have been revolutionized, incorporating virtual tours, augmented reality features, and streamlined online transactions.

These technological advancements have fundamentally changed how PWAN Premium engages with its clients, making the process more accessible and efficient. These innovations collectively ensure that PWAN Premium remains at the forefront of modern real estate trends.

Reflecting on the broader challenges facing the delivery of affordable housing in Nigeria, Dr. Oberabor outlines several key bottlenecks that persist. High construction costs are a major issue, driven by volatility in material prices and a dependency on imported materials. Land acquisition issues present significant hurdles due to complex land tenure laws and ownership disputes, which often slow down the progress of development projects.

Inadequate infrastructure, including poor transportation networks and limited utility access, further hinders large-scale housing development, making many potentially viable locations challenging to develop affordably. Regulatory and bureaucratic hurdles, characterized by lengthy and complicated approval processes, also impede the timely delivery of housing projects. Lastly, economic instability, including currency fluctuations and inflation, discourages the long-term investment required for significant affordable housing initiatives.

Addressing these complex issues requires a concerted effort. Dr. Oberabor emphasizes that collaboration between government, the private sector, and local communities is essential to unlock the potential for affordable housing in Nigeria.

Specific actions recommended include streamlining land acquisition processes, simplifying regulatory procedures to reduce bureaucratic delays, improving infrastructure to support development in new areas, and promoting the local production of building materials to reduce costs and import dependency. Implementing these measures would go a long way in making affordable housing a reality for more Nigerians.

Dr. Christiana Kanu: Building Dreams and Breaking Barriers in Nigerian Real Estate

Dr. Christiana Kanu, Founder/GMD, Property Crew Group

Dr. Christiana Kanu, the visionary founder of The Property Crew Group (which includes Paradise Estates Development Company), embarked on an entrepreneurial journey fueled by a profound commitment to delivering transformative solutions and setting a new benchmark in the industry. The inspiration for this journey was a simple yet profound observation: Nigeria’s housing deficit wasn’t just a crisis, but a powerful call to action.

Armed with a strong foundation in business and accounting and guided by unwavering determination, Dr. Christiana Kanu envisioned a future where property ownership was attainable for all Nigerians, fostering inclusive communities that empower upward mobility.

In 2016, Property Crew Group was founded, not merely as a business venture, but as a movement anchored in purpose. Starting with a modest team and a towering vision, they launched their first estate, Paradise Atlantic City, in Lagos. From the outset, the mission was clear: building homes meant building hope.

Operating in an industry long considered predominantly male-dominated, Dr. Christiana Kanu faced significant hurdles. The journey involved confronting the familiar echoes of doubt and the silent ceilings that often hang overhead for women leaders.

Securing capital, gaining access to essential networks, and breaking into traditional boardrooms were not just challenges, but veritable battlegrounds. Added to this were the complexities of navigating gender bias, informal market politics, regulatory red tape, and the weight of expectation. Yet, with every obstacle, the choice was resolve over retreat, demonstrating remarkable resilience.

Despite the challenges, Property Crew Group has consistently demonstrated a commitment to innovation, particularly in addressing the pressing need for affordable housing in Nigeria. Paradise Estate Development Company has adopted a refreshingly innovative approach, blending accessibility, quality, and financial flexibility. A standout solution is their various instalment payment schemes, such as “Pay small small to own a land,” particularly available at Paradise Atlantic City and Paradise Foreshore Estate.

This model allows buyers to secure a land plot with an initial deposit and spread the balance over time, significantly lowering the barrier to entry for aspiring homeowners, especially young professionals and middle-income earners. Furthermore, they have successfully introduced estate land priced up to 20% lower than comparable properties in the market, achieving this without compromising on quality or amenities. By strategically combining affordability with smart design, strategic location, and customer-centric financing, Paradise Estate Development Company is actively reshaping the path to property ownership in Nigeria.

In response to this challenging environment, Property Crew Group has adapted strategically to maintain operational efficiency and market relevance.

Their approach includes adopting local sourcing to reduce costs, investing in energy-efficient infrastructure, continuing to offer flexible payment plans, streamlining operations through technology, and emphasising long-term value in their marketing. These actions reflect a deep commitment to understanding customer needs and maintaining market resilience.

In an industry where trust and transparency are paramount concerns, Property Crew Group has implemented specific strategies to build and sustain client confidence. The post-COVID-19 era has seen significant shifts in the real estate landscape, with a surge in demand for smart home technology, flexible payment plans, and digital solutions. Property Crew Group’s most impactful innovation in this evolving environment is their seamless integration of smart home technology and flexible ownership models, designed specifically to meet the changing expectations of modern buyers.

Through recent developments like Paradise Luxury Lofts and Paradise Foreshore Estate, the company has introduced fully automated homes featuring smart surveillance, energy-efficient systems, and digital access controls. These technological enhancements not only boost security and convenience but also align with the growing demand for tech-enabled living.

Equally transformative is their flexible payment structure, which now includes long-term installment plans and rent-to-own options, making premium living more accessible even in times of economic uncertainty. By combining cutting-edge technology with financial inclusivity, Property Crew Group is not just adapting to change; they are setting a new standard for the future of real estate in Nigeria.

Their commitment extends further through partnerships with NGOs, such as the Virgy Kanu Foundation. Through these collaborations, they empower underserved communities and widows with vocational skills, helping them reintegrate into society with dignity and opportunity.

Her influence also extends to the hospitality sector with brands like Flex Lagos and Shortlet Nigeria, reflecting a commitment to comfort and innovation. Furthermore, she is spearheading a new venture: a cutting-edge Proptech solution aimed at empowering real estate practitioners and investors with smarter tools.

Today, Property Crew Group stands as a powerful testament to what can be achieved when determination is fused with purpose. It exemplifies the transformative power of women leaders not just being given a seat at the table, but having the vision and drive to build the table themselves.
