Nigeria’s Junior Swim Team concluded their campaign at the 16th Africa Junior Swimming Championships in Egypt on a triumphant note, securing three gold medals and a bronze, all courtesy of sensational young swimmer Abduljabal Adama.
The teenage prodigy delivered a historic performance, not only dominating his races but also shattering records on the continental stage. Abduljabal Adama racked up all the medals for Nigeria in the championship.
He broke the championship record twice on his way to a gold medal in the 50-meter butterfly, with a time of 24.19 seconds in the heats and 23.89 in the finals.
Adama also broke the African record in the 50-meter freestyle at the championship, with a time of 22.24 seconds, beating the previous record of 22.65 seconds.
Another swimmer, Kashope Obatoyinbo, who also qualified, was in the final.
Although he didn’t medal, he came 6th, surpassing his personal best time with 23.92.
Adama clinched his final gold in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 26.64, making it 3 for Nigeria at the 16th Africa Junior Swimming Championships in Egypt.
Even though he didn’t break the existing record in the 100m freestyle or meet his personal best, his efforts were good enough to earn Nigeria the gold. He also won the bronze medal in the 100-meter butterfly in Egypt.
He was named the best male swimmer of the tournament, becoming the only swimmer from a black African country to make the podium at the tournament.
Speaking after the championship, the President of the Aquatic Federation of Nigeria, Chinonye Daphey Aliyu, praised the resilience and tenacity of the athletes.
Aliyu said, “We are so proud of those achievements at this event. This is the best that has happened to swimming in 33 years, surpassing the bronze at the Africa Games.”
She thanked the leadership of the National Sports Commission for their support and assistance in making this happen.
She reiterated the Federation’s commitment to improving the quality of swimming in Nigeria and promised to improve on this performance at the World Junior event coming up in August in Romania and the African Youth Games in December in Angola.
