Akinwumi lauds GTBank/Lagos Principals Cup initiative

First Vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Chairman of the Lagos State FA, Seyi Akinwumi, has expressed satisfaction with the organisation of this year’s GTBank/Lagos Principals Cup competition, which has entered its final stage.

The Lagos FA boss also commended the exceptional display of talent and discipline by the participating schools, saying: “there have been a lot of improvement.”

Speaking at Onikan Stadium during the semifinal matches, Akinwumi, who witnessed some of the teams on display, said: “We are quite happy with the schools because there has been less attempts to cheat. They know we don’t tolerate nonsense. They have been keeping to the rules, the quality is higher and we have witnessed tremendous improvement in the standard of play.”

He said the GTBank/Lagos Principals Cup initiative falls in line with the state development programme. “It is clear that Lagos FA is one of the leading lights in football development in the country. What we can do with the GTB/Principals Cup programme is to harness this into the bigger picture of the NFF development programme.

“I will use my position as the First Vice President of the NFF to marry the Lagos model with the NFF’s youth development plan.”

He spoke of a plan to bring back the Academicals Cup and other related grassroots oriented competitions in the nearest future.
