November is one month to remember and cherished by Olorogun Albert Akpomudje, the President General Worldwide of Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association.
For historic reasons, in the second week of November (15), the deputy chairman of the Body of Benchers in Nigeria will go through the coronation ceremony that would culminate in his being handed the staff of office as the Owhorode (king) of the Ancient Olomu Kingdom.
A week after (November 22), he will deliver the seventh edition of the yearly GCU Relays, an event that could possibly pass as his final Relays as PGWW, given the succession tradition and rituals of the GCUOBA Worldwide.
“It’s been a most interesting period in delivering past editions of the yearly GCU Relays, and to think that this seventh edition could be the last that I would preside over before the end of my tenure and the subsequent transition to my would be successor, it behoves on me to deliver the best GCU Relays ever,” he said .
For the umpteenth time, Apomudje has given further assurances of a uniquely different and competitive seventh edition of the event. He disclosed that organisational structures have been put in place to deliver the most colourful and competitive edition of the athletic meet.
The event, hosted under the auspices of the Old Boys Association, has been confirmed for November 22, 2025 at the school’s tartan tracks built by NNPC/Shell Petroleum Development Company, but now in need of refurbishment.
“Having confirmed the date for this year’s edition, we have commenced early preparations by reaching out to our potential sponsors – companies and Old Boys, with a view to raking in the required funds needed for a glamorous event, which the seventh edition represents,’’ he said.
Interestingly, over 60 schools across Nigeria and 500 athletes will be participating at this year’s edition.
