The driver accused of causing the car crash that injured British boxing star Anthony Joshua and killed two members of his entourage has appeared before a Nigerian court.
The fatal accident occurred on December 29 on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, when a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and his team collided with a stationary truck. Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, died instantly at the scene, while the former heavyweight champion sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital.
The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, on Wednesday appeared before the Sagamu Magistrates Court in Ogun State. Prosecutors requested an adjournment to allow more time to complete investigations and assemble evidence, prompting the court to fix March 13 for further hearing.
Kayode faces multiple charges, including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and operating a vehicle without a valid national driver’s licence. He has not yet entered a plea.
Investigators told the court that the SUV was travelling at a high speed before slamming into the parked truck. While Joshua escaped with minor injuries, the impact proved fatal for his two close aides.
The defendant was initially charged in January and granted bail in the sum of five million naira, pending the conclusion of investigations. Prosecutors said the case involves several technical assessments and witness testimonies linked to the crash.
The incident has once again drawn attention to safety concerns on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest and most accident-prone highways.
Joshua was discharged from hospital two days after the crash and later returned to the United Kingdom to continue his recovery. The deaths of Ayodele and Ghami have been described as a devastating loss to his team.
