Ayew, Gomis’ goals sink Manchester United
SWANSEA continued their excellent start to the season by coming back from a goal down to beat Manchester United.
Louis van Gaal’s side took the lead thanks to Juan Mata early in the second half. But they were pegged back following an excellent header by Andre Ayew. And Swansea went in front when a sumptuous outside of the boot pass by the Ghanaian found Bafetimbi Gomis and the French striker poked the ball past Sergio Romero.
Both sides could have taken the lead in the first half with Mata shooting wide twice from promising positions while a clever free kick found its way to Gylfi Sigurdsson but the Icelander missed the far post.
Gomis then hit the woodwork when he bullied Daley Blind and Chris Smalling before striking the base of the post.
At a rainy Liberty stadium, Wayne Rooney once again cut a sluggish figure as he struggled to influence the match.
Just three minutes into the second half, Luke Shaw made an excellent run down the left and his cross was missed by Rooney but found Mata at the far post and the Spaniard finished well.
United nearly added a second when Ashley Williams’ sliced attempt at cutting out a cross forced Lukasz Fabianski into a reflex one handed save.
But Swansea got an equaliser on the counter-attack when Williams picked up a loose ball and found Sigurdsson.
The midfielder’s cross found Ayew whose header beat Romero’s despairing dive.
