South Africa Coach Hugo Broos and his team will need to improve their attacking efficiency and overcome the heavy roster suspensions to keep their Round of 32 hopes alive at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Bafana Bafana, one of Africa’s teams, suffered a 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico in the opening match at the Mexico City Stadium on Thursday.
Three players were sent off in that dramatic opening match.
While South Africa finished with nine men, Mexico were reduced to 10 in the closing moments.
Brazilian referee, Wilton Sampaio, produced the flurry of red cards, dismissing South Africa’s Yaya Sithole for denying a goalscoring opportunity and Themba Zwane for a slap, then sending off Mexico’s Cesar Montes for a late foul.
Only four red cards were shown in the entire Qatar 2022 World Cup, while three had never been shown in a tournament’s opening game before.
The opening night clash significantly hindered Bafana Bafana’s campaign through a series of major setbacks. They must regroup quickly to face Czechia on June 18 at the Atlanta Stadium, followed by a final group fixture against South Korea.
With the duo of midfielders, Sithole and Zwane, handed straight red cards in Thursday’s opening match, the South Africans, with no goal and a negative goal difference, sits at the bottom of Group A.
Mexico’s 2-0 victory may have put pressure on two other co-host nations, Canada and USA to deliver for the home fans.
Co-host country, Canada, played against Bosnia on Friday, while USA will face Paraguay in their opening group match in the early hours of Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Unified Nigeria Football Supporters Club and Vice President of Africa Sports Supporters Club, Vincent Okumagba, is sure Ghana will beat Panama on Wednesday (12am Nigerian time on Thursday) in Canada.
“We are here in Canada waiting for Ghana to take on Panama on Wednesday, and I am sure the Black Stars will do Africa proud,” Okumagba told The Guardian in a telephone chat on Friday.
