The Nigeria rugby national team (Black Stallions) bounced back from their defeat by Zambia in the opening match of the on-going African Rugby 1C Cup Championship yesterday to defeat Zimbabwe in the last match of their campaign at the African tournament holding in Zambia. This victory brightens the team’s chances of moving to African Division 1B.

The Black Stallions, led by South African legend, Fabian Juries, walked their way back to win by 34 to 23 points after trailing in the first half by 13 points to eight against the third best rugby playing nation in Africa. The win was made possible by two tries each from Christian Ogar, Ekpo Samuel and Godwin Emanuel, who scored one try with Azeez Ladipo converting a penalty and three trys.

Speaking after the game, Juries commended his players for displaying maturity and raising the standard of their game against Zimbabwe. He said the forwards and the backlines functioned effectively, which resulted in scoring a few good tries.

Juries promised to continue working hard to build a formidable team and source for more quality talents to fortify the team.

Captain of the Black Stallions, Azeez Ladipo, praised the resilience of the team and the players’ exceptional skills.

He also praised the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) for ensuring the team had the best of preparation, which played a part in the victory.

NRFF technical director, Fasimoye Olatunji, told The Guardian that the victory over Zimbabwe would help the team to secure the 1B division ticket.

With the loss against host nation Zambia and a victory against Zimbabwe, the Stallions’ hope of securing a passage to the 1B Division now hinges on the outcome of the game between Zambia and Zimbabwe tomorrow.
