Chelle aims to continue winning streak as Poland hosts Nigeria in Warsaw

Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle

Super Eagles Coach, Eric Chelle, believes his team are ready to continue their winning streak, which has seen them losing only once since they failed to qualify for the forthcoming 2026 World Cup in North America.

Since the Super Eagles lost the 2026 World Cup playoff against DR Congo in Morocco, Nigeria has lost only once, a penalty shootout defeat to Morocco at the last Africa Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles last week defeated Zimbabwe and Jamaica to retain the Unity Cup in London, scoring five goals and conceding none.

The run also includes friendly victories over World Cup bound Iran and a draw against Jordan. But today’s game against Robert Lewandowski’s Poland is expected to be of higher standard, as the Poles also have a point to prove after failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

They lost 0-2 to Ukraine in an earlier friendly game and would want to return to winning ways as some of their top stars, including Lewandowski, near the twilight of their careers.

For both teams, the fixture offers an opportunity to demonstrate progress and build momentum ahead of future competitive assignments.

The match will also mark only the second senior international meeting between the two countries. Their first encounter came in March 2018, when Nigeria defeated Poland 1-0 in Wroclaw, courtesy of Victor Moses’ penalty, during preparations for the FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Nigeria’s recent success has generated optimism about Eric Chelle’s tenure. The Franco-Malian coach believes the team is developing a stronger competitive mentality.

“There is a culture of winning that we are trying to build in this team, and that mentality is important,” Chelle said after Monday’s training session.

“You can say that it is difficult to have games at this time because the players have been in holiday mood for about two weeks, but the job must be done.

“We have 18 players in camp now, and we will work with that. Everybody must work hard, and we will go into the match with the determination to win.”

The number increased to 19 with the arrival of Fisayo Dele-Bashiru yesterday morning.

Among the players that trained yesterday are goalkeepers Maduka Okoye, Francis Uzoho and Arthur Okonkwo; defenders Bruno Onyemaechi, Zaidu Sanusi, Emmanuel Fernandez and Igoh Ogbu; midfielders Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika and Tochukwu Nnadi; and forwards Moses Simon, Paul Onuachu, Jerome Akor Adams, Terem Moffi and Rafiu Durosinmi.

Defender Semi Ajayi and fresh invitee Abdullahi Bewene, who arrived later on Monday, were also in the team’s preparations yesterday ahead of the encounter.
