Construction works, renovations put Warri-Effurun Peace Marathon on hold
The 2024 Warri Effurun Peace Marathon (WEPM) has been postponed due to various construction works in the twin cities of Warri and Effurun, the organisers have said.
Organisers of the WEPM said concern for athletes safety and security were paramount in the yearly 10km race, which was scheduled to hold on November 30.
“There are massive road construction and rehabilitation works by the Delta State government going on in most parts of Warri and Effurun,” chief organiser of the WEPM, Mrs. Joyce Bozimo, said yesterday.
“All the routes we have mapped out have been dug up and besides, the Warri Town Stadium, our finishing point, is under renovation so are the roads leading to it.”
“So we have decided to postpone to a new date when we can have a conducive environment to run.”
The WEPM has been on for eight years and has become one of the major races Nigerian distance runners look forward to contesting every year.
“Much as it is painful we can’t have the event at this time, we look forward to coming back in a much-improved environment.
“We plead with the athletes already warming up to bear with us, we will return at a more convenient date,” added Mrs. Bozimo.
