Customs charges officers on physical, mental fitness

Comptroller-General of Customs, Dr Bashir Adewale Adeniyi,

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has unveiled the Wale Adeniyi Sports Arena (WASA) at its Western Marine Command Apapa as part of its efforts to promote physical and mental fitness among officers.

Speaking at the commissioning of the facility yesterday, the Comptroller General of Customs, Dr Bashir Adeniyi, urged officers of the service to prioritise their physical and mental well-being, as their daily operational demands necessitate a culture of consistent exercise.

Adeniyi described the newly-built sports facility as a strategic investment in the well-being of officers, urging the command to leverage the arena and ensure it is fully utilised.

“Our job requires that we remain physically and mentally fit. This facility was built to be used and I encourage all officers to make regular use of it by embracing regular exercise, so that they can remain physically and mentally fit,” he added.

The commissioning ceremony was marked by a display of sportsmanship, with Comptroller General of Customs engaging in a table tennis match against a navy admiral, followed by a thrilling football match, which highlighted the unifying power of sports in fostering camaraderie and unity.

In his remarks, the Area Controller of the Western Marine Command, Paul Ntadi, said the sports facility represents more than just a recreational facility, as it aligns with the broader security and community engagement objectives of the Nigeria Customs Service.

Ntadi said providing safe spaces for recreation, mentorship and healthy competition would help keep youths away from crime, restiveness, drug abuse and other social vices.

The CAC further noted that the facility is designed to take young people off the streets and channel their energy into constructive activities.

“WASA is built to become a centre of unity, growth and positive transformation to nurture talents, inspire dreams and keep youths away from negative influences,” Ntadi said.
