D’Tigresses, Nigeria’s senior women basketball team, will battle for a ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in the French city of Nantes, the sport’s governing body FIBA has said.
The Executive Committee of FIBA had announced after a meeting in Switzerland on Tuesday that France will host the 12-team FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament (WOQT).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the national team will represent Africa at the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women scheduled for June 13 to June 19.
They qualified for the FIBA WOQT after finishing third at the 2015 AfroBasket for Women in Cameroon, alongside the hosts.
The 12 teams that will compete in the WOQT are Argentina, Belarus, Cameroon, China, Cuba, France, Korea, New Zealand, Nigeria, Spain, Turkey and Venezuela.
The top five teams in the event will secure places at Rio 2016, scheduled for Rio in Brazil from Aug. 6 to Aug. 21.
Also, Italy, Philippines and Serbia have secured the hosting rights for the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments for Men (OQTs).
Winners of each six-team event will qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
The OQTs will hold in Turin (Italy), Manila (Philippines) and Belgrade (Serbia) from July 4 to July 10.
The teams that will compete in the three OQTs include Angola, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Iran, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Senegal, Serbia and Tunisia.
In line with the final standings of EuroBasket 2015 and the FIBA World Ranking, Latvia, Croatia and Turkey will be invited to complete the 18-team OQTs line-up.
The draws for the three OQTs and the WOQT will take place at The House of Basketball, FIBA’s headquarters, on Tuesday.
NAN reports that FIBA is the world governing body for basketball, and it is an independent association formed by 215 National Basketball Federations throughout the world.
It is recognised as the sole competent authority in basketball by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
