Nigeria’s national U-17 team, the Golden Eaglets, yesterday afternoon arrived in Santiago, Chile, venue of the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup. The Eaglets were in Argentina for close to one month preparing for the competition, which kicks off this weekend.
The team ended their training tour of the South American country with a 3-1 defeat of Racing Club of Buenos Aires.
A brace from Victor Osimhen plus a third from Samuel Chukwueze ensured a convincing win against the Argentine outfit, whose only goal was scored by Gutiares.
Speaking on his team’s readiness to defend the crown they won in 2013, Head Coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, said yesterday the training tour of Argentina has toughened his players, adding that his team’s objective is to win the world title.
“The most important thing is to see the players grow from strength to strength and I am particularly pleased with their performance against Racing,” he told the NFF website.
He added, “We are not carried away despite winning our two matches here, but we are happy we have achieved some of our objectives of coming to Argentina. We have been struggling to adjust to the cold weather since it is colder in Chile.
“The World Cup is a different ball game because all the 24 teams have the chance to win but we are going to Chile with the objective of defending the trophy and we are looking forward to a good tournament.”
Nigeria will battle the United States on Saturday at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos, Santiago in their group match opener.
