Africa’s most successful women’s football team, the Super Falcons, will know their opponents in the qualifying series for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games today.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) said in a statement yesterday that the draw for the African qualifying phase of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games Women’s Football Tournament will be held today at CAF’s headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

Thirty-five national teams are involved in this qualifying campaign. These are Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Comoros, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar and Malawi.

Others are Mali, Mauritius, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The qualifying series will hold in five qualifying rounds, with two teams emerging as Africa’s representatives at the Los Angeles Olympic Games Women’s Football Tournament, scheduled for July 11 to 29, 2028.

The Nigeria Super Falcons are the only African women’s team to reach the quarterfinals at both the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Summer Olympics, achieving the latter at Athens 2004.

The team returned to the Olympics at the Paris 2024 edition after a 16-year absence. Now, the challenge is to qualify for the 2028 Games and improve on their quarterfinals record.
