The 2019 edition of the Anioma Community Unity Cup will kick off tomorrow with all the nine local councils of the Delta North Senatorial zone vying for honours.

The competition, put together by the Friday Osanebi Foundation in collaboration with Anioma Voice Worldwide Inc, will end on December 24.

The football tournament, which will involve the nine Local Government Areas of the Delta North Senatorial District, will be played across six centers, including Asaba, Ogwashi Uku, Agbor, Kwale, Ashaka, and Ibusa.

The 18 participating communities are Asaba, Akwukwu Igbo, Onicha Ugbo, Ibusa, Agbor, Amai, Obiaruku, Oko, Issele Uku, Aboh, Owa Oyibu, Ogume, Kwale, Umunede, Ubulu Uku, Ogwashi Uku, Abavo, and Beneku, with each Local Council Area presenting two teams.

According to the organisers, tomorrow’s opening match will hold at Ashaka with Ogwashi Uku meeting Beneku, while the final game will be played at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba on December 24.

The winner of the competition will get N1 million, while the runner up and third-place finisher will receive N500, 000 and N300, 000 respectively.

Speaking about the tournament, the Founder of Anioma Voice Worldwide Inc, Comrade Akamesike Manuel Okonne explained that the principal reason for the tournament was to acknowledge and appreciate the degree of unity displayed by the indigenes of Anioma towards the re-election of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, who is the first elected Anioma indigene to become governor of Delta State.

He commended the sense of unity showed by the people of Anioma in the 2015 election, but was quick to add that the 2019 support was phenomenal, giving the fact that there were many efforts by outsiders to create division within the Anioma nation, as the people stood firm to support the governor.

He, however, enjoined the participating communities to see football as a form of unity, while they give in their best to win the competition.
