KITCHEN cabinets, especially those made of wood really look nice but they may look dull and stained with time due to activities that go on in the kitchen.

They may not necessarily need to be overhauled; it could be just good cleaning that is needed to bring them back to life.

Cleaning cabinets could be quick, easy task or take hours, depending on how long since the last time they were cleaned. The problem is that grease, food particles, smoke and anything else circulating through the air in the kitchen will stick to the cabinets making them grimy.

Since the major cause is grease, cabinets need to be cleaned with products that cut grease. Mild dishwashing liquids are good cabinet cleaning products. A mild laundry detergent, especially one touted for cutting grease and oil, also does well this task.

Dilute one part soap in two parts warm water and clean the cabinets using a sponge or green scrubbing pad. Do not use steel wool, scrub brushes or any other item that can scratch the wood.

An all-purpose household cleaner can be used in the same manner. Read the label carefully to be sure it will not ruin the finish.

For more natural remedy, there are several options. Vinegar is good for this purpose. A paste made of baking soda and water makes a formidable scrub and helps remove a lot of the grime.

If wood cabinets are very difficult to clean, try paint remover. Take many precautions, however. Since this will involve working in the kitchen, make sure there are no open flames or sources of heat nearby.

For anyone who is inclined, cabinets can be given a shine by buffing them with furniture wax suitable for a particular finish. Once cabinets are cleaned, it is necessary to give them a periodic clean down.
