Lagos rewards 19 students for excellence in school sports

PERMANENT Secretary at the Lagos State Sports Ministry, Oluseyi Whenu, has urged parents to encourage their children who show interest in sports as the government will continue to support athletes representing the state.

  Oluseyi  Whenu, who represented the Lagos State Commissioner for Sports, Youth and Social Development, Waheed Oshodi, at a reception for outstanding athletes of the state at the Teslim Balogun, Surulere, said parental guidance was necessary to build the youths to their optimum potential.

 At the event, 19 school athletes, who distinguished themselves in their various sports in 2014, were rewarded for their achievements.

   Whenu commended the parents of the rewarded athletes for their support and appreciated the awardees for making the state proud in 2014.

  His words: “I want to urge other parents to always support their children who have interest in sport in the bid to develop sports in Lagos State and in our country Nigeria,” he stated.

  At the event, the state’s director of sports, Kweku Tandoh, presented the athletes with Addidas gift vouchers and letters of commendations.   

  Responding on behalf of the athletes, Ikoko Onengo thanked the state for the recognition given to them and gave kudos to their parents for their relentless support.

  Some of the awardees are Magdalene George of C/S Comprehensive College, Ijesha and Ruth Osoro of National College Gbagada, who are athletes. 

 Badminton player, Ogunsowo Emmanuel of Yaba City College, Oyinlomo Quadre of Mary Anne College, Lagos Island (Tennis), Eniola Adedeji of Mobolaji Bank Anthony Secondary School, Yaba (gymnastic), Oladimeji Oluwaseyi of Bachel Model College Ogba (Chess), and Angela Osaigbovo of Grange College Ikeja, (Scrabble).

  Others are Ibikunle Daniel of Heroes Faith College, Ikorodu (swimming), Adeoye Hammeed of Peterbay College, Orile Igammu ( Taekwando) and Ibrahimo Ramon of Herbert Macauley Junior High School, Yaba (Judo).
