Lagos Tennis Association honours Okoya, Oboh, Ositelu

FOR their contributions to the development of tennis in the country and Lagos State in particular, Lagos State Tennis Association (LSTA) has honoured the Pillar of Sports, Okoya Thomas, Oceanic Bank Plc’s Managing Director, John Oboh, and The Guardian’s Deacon Ayo Ositelu.

Presenting the award during the maiden LSTA-organised U-18 tennis tournament held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere at the weekend, LSTA Chairman, Akin Adesokan, said the awardees were deserving of the award given their individual contributions at various capacities to the growth and development of tennis, especially in Lagos State.

While well known sports philanthropist, Okoya, is reputed for sponsoring various sporting events, among which is the popular Asoju Oba Table Tennis tournament, which has continued to boost the development of the game in the country, Oboh has continued Oceanic Bank’s culture of sports development by sponsoring the maiden LSTA tennis tournament.

More so, veteran sports writer, Deacon Ositelu, continues to add credibility to the game with informed opinion on tennis in The Guardian newspaper.

In his address, Adesokan said that in the area of sports, the Lagos State Government has put in a lot in the last three years – from football competitions to basketball tournaments. He added: “We appreciate all this and would like more of such games to give our youths avenues to compete and expend their energy.”

Stating that LSTA was hoping that Oceanic Bank would continue to make the U-18 competition an annual event, he advised that, “parents, guardians and teachers should encourage their children/wards, students to participate in sporting activities.

“This is essential to nurture the younger generation to be competitive, focused and more confident as adults. We too can be in the world tennis circuit with an annual Eko ATP Open Tournament. This is a challenge to the Lagos State Sports Council and Lagos State Tennis Association to make this a reality; it can be done.”
