The 2026 Evolution Cup has sparked excitement in Lagos, as top football scouts and agents—including FIFA-licensed agent Drew Uyi and former Super Eagles midfielder Seyi Olofinjana—storm the tournament to discover the next generation of stars.
The three-day Under-16 competition, taking place at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium, Surulere, has rapidly emerged as one of the most prestigious grassroots tournaments in Nigeria, drawing elite young talents from top academies eager to impress.
For many Nigerian youngsters, the dream of playing in Europe remains a driving force. Capitalising on this ambition, organisers of the Evolution Cup have brought in high-profile scouts and agents to provide players with real opportunities to break into international football.
This year’s edition has raised the stakes, with a select group of European scouts joining Uyi and Olofinjana to identify standout talents for the global stage.
Founded in 2021 by Evolution Football Academy, the tournament was designed to bridge the gap between grassroots football and professional opportunities. The academy, registered with the Lagos State Football Association, continues to position itself as a key driver of youth development.
Six teams—Evolution FA, Goalgetters FA, Utmost FA, Right2Win FA, Inspire FA, and Dominion Hotspur—are battling for top honours, with players delivering high-intensity performances under the watchful eyes of international scouts.
Tournament organiser, Engr. Olatunji Olalekan, described Nigeria as a powerhouse of football talent, emphasising the importance of grassroots systems in sustaining the country’s global reputation.
“From the streets to structured academies, football is deeply rooted in our national identity. Grassroots development remains the backbone of our success, producing players who excel on the global stage,” he said.
The presence of Uyi, Olofinjana, and other foreign scouts has injected fresh energy into the tournament, inspiring young players to raise their game.
Uyi, a respected FIFA-licensed agent and sports management expert trained in the United Kingdom, boasts an impressive portfolio, having worked with top Nigerian players including Odion Ighalo, Ahmed Musa, Olanrewaju Kayode, Emmanuel Dennis, Shehu Abdullahi, and Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi.
Their involvement has significantly elevated the tournament’s profile, reinforcing its growing reputation as a vital launchpad for Nigeria’s next football exports.
