WWP to honour Abia State governor

WORLD Wrestling Professionals (WWP), a body responsible for professional wrestling in Africa, has revealed that it would honour the Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji, in August for his contributions to the development of the sport in Nigeria.

Speaking when he led a delegation of WWP officials and wrestlers to Abia State Government Lodge in Abuja over the weekend, WWP President, Mark Beale, said the African wrestling community was indebted to Governor Orji for his efforts in lifting the sport despite his other pressing issues as state governor.

According to Beale, “with the support of such prominent African as Governor Orji, we in WWP believe that our wrestlers will go places. I came here to assure the governor and other well meaning Nigerians that we are determined to take wrestling to the highest level, and we are happy that we are getting enough support from prominent Nigerians.”

In his speech at the event, Orji assured WWP that he would contribute to the successful hosting of the Commonwealth Champion of Champions tournament scheduled to hold in Nigeria in October. Orji regretted that Nigeria has not been able to replace such world acclaimed wrestlers as the late Power Mike, Ben Lion Heart, Mike Bamidele and Power Uti.

“I know De Ultimate Commander has all the potential to become a world champion in an organised wrestling championship,” he said. “And I want to assure both the WWP and De Commander that Abia will do everything possible for the championship to be successful in Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, Abia State-born Osita Offor, also known as De Ultimate Commander, has revealed that the state has been supporting him in his career. The WWP Commonwealth Champion of Champions Wrestling Championship, billed to hold in cities across the country, is expected to feature about 40 wrestlers.
