As part of his efforts to encourage grassroots football development in the country, member, representing Surulere 1 Constituency at the Federal House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has launched a grassroots football league for his constituents in Lagos State.

The competition, which will debut from December 12 to February 5, 2016, Gbajabiamila said on Monday, was another opportunity for youths around the community to get more exposed in football.

He revealed that organising the grassroots football championship was another avenue to churn out talents that will represent the country in international championships in future.

He urged the nine wards in the constituency to support the league, saying it would go a long way to sustain co-operation in Surulere Council.

“I decided to organise the football league to help grassroots football development. Surelere, my constituency, has abundant talents that can play for any national team in future.

“The championship will also create an enabling environment for youths to compete and entertain themselves through football. This is the first edition and I am giving out the sum of N1 million to the winners of the league, N750, 000 to the second runner up and N500, 000 to the third position,” he said.

Co-ordinator of the league, Nollywood actor and Lagos House of Assembly member, Desmond Elliot, said the championship would help budding footballers in Surulere LGA to sharpen their skills in the game.

In the championship grouping, Group A 1 will feature Ward F22, Ward F33, Ward G4, Ward G35, Ward F16 and Ward E.

Group B1 has Ward E12, Ward G13, Ward G24, LGA 5 and Veterans in Football.
