German firm, C Woermann, to establish football academy in Lagos

As part of its efforts to boost grassroots football across the world, a German company, C Woermann has concluded plans to establish a soccer academy in Nigeria.The German company has been proving assistance for Colin
Edwin Global Sport Limited, a grassroots sport development organization
in Lagos, helping young footballers who are
aspiring to go professional.

One of such young footballers, Ugonna Anyaora, who currently
plays for FK Haugesund in Norwegian Premier League, used the academy to hone his skills before departing for Europe a few years ago.

National Coordinator of the group, Ossy Nwokeabia, told The Guardian at the Legacy Pitch of the
National Stadium, Lagos that he was excited to hear from officials of C Woermann company on its plan to establish a football academy in Nigeria.

“We have been operating since 2006 and C Woermann had been of tremendous assistance to young Nigerian footballers,” Nwokeabia said. “Now, our partners in Germany are coming to Nigeria very soon with the sole aim of establishing a football academy in Nigeria. This will go a long way in laying solid foundation for our young footballers.”

Also speaking with The Guardian, a German, David Kornemann, who was at the National Stadium to see the young players being trained by Collins Edwin academy, said that club officials from the German Bundesliga are expected to in arrive Lagos next month to inspect the quality of players. “By the time this academy is fully established here, many young Nigerian footballers will have the opportunity of taking their soccer trade to Germany and Danish League,” Kornemann stated.

The Guardian learnt C Woermann sponsored the head coach of Colin Edwin academy, Ngu Uche Jay, on a tour recently where he spent two weeks with Go-Ahead Eagles in Holland before relocating to Norway, where he spent 13 days with FK Haugesund.The Colin
