Ghana names 23 players as FIFA approves Aisha Buhari Cup

One of the top contenders for the maiden Aisha Buhari Invitational Women Football Tournament, Ghana, yesterday, named their 23-woman squad for the competition, which will hold from September 15 to 21, 2021.
 
The Black Queens will play in Group B alongside the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroun and South Africa’s Banyana Banyana.

In the team are goalkeepers Fafali Dumehasi (Police Ladies); Victoria Agyei (Kumasi Sports Academy); and Mary Neequaye (Immigration Ladies). 

The defenders are Gladys Amfobea (Ladystrikers); Nina Norshie (Berry Ladies); Ellen Coleman (Ladystrikers); Janet Egyir (Hasaacas Ladies); Philicity Asuako (Police Ladies); Naomi Anima (Kumasi Sports Academy); and Justice Tweneboaa (Ampem Dakoa Ladies).
 
The midfielders in the squad are Priscilla Okyere (Hapoel Be’er Sheva, Israel); Grace Acheampong (Ashtown Ladies); Rashida Ibrahim (Berry Ladies); Henrietta Annie (Police Ladies); Monica Addai (Berry Ladies); Grace Asantewaa (Real Betis, Spain); and Grace Adams (Berry Ladies).

Meanwhile, world football–governing body, FIFA on Wednesday provided the Local Organising Committee with a final go-ahead to stage the Aisha Buhari Cup. The six-nation invitational is being organised in honour of the name and Office of the First Lady of the Federal Republic, Aisha Muhammadu Buhari.

In a letter dated September 8, 2021, and signed by Gordon Savic, Head of Qualifiers and International Matches, the world body noted it has sanctioned the showpiece that holds at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena and Agege Stadium in the City of Lagos and featuring hosts Nigeria, Cameroun, Ghana, Mali, Morocco and South Africa’s ‘A’ Women teams.
