Ghana sacks Black Stars’ coach, Addo 72 days to opening game

Otto Addo

Ghanaian football has been thrown into turmoil by the Black Stars’ decision to sack head coach Otto Addo barely 72 days to the kickoff of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Addo’s sack comes less than 24 hours after the Black Stars’ 1-2 loss to Germany in a 2026 World Cup test game.

Monday’s loss came a few days after the team’s 5-1 defeat by Austria and the fifth straight loss in a row.

Addo was appointed as Ghana head coach on March 15, 2024, while he previously took on an interim role with the Black Stars.

He guided the Black Stars to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after failing to make the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Morocco.

In a statement announcing the development, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said: “The Ghana Football Association has parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team, Otto Addo, effective immediately.

“The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.”

“The Ghana Football Association will communicate the new technical direction of the Black Stars in due course”.

Addo, 50, was born in Germany and spent his entire playing career in the country, also winning 15 caps for Ghana, and began his second spell as national team manager in March 2024.

Ghana will open their campaign at the World Cup against Panama on June 18 before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

The World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
