Gordons to bring humour, motivation to FIBA Youth basketball finals

The inaugural FIBA Africa Zone Three Academies Tournament is set to deliver more than competitive basketball this weekend, with organisers confirming the attendance of veteran Nigerian comedian, Godwin Komone, popularly known as Gordons, as a special guest.

The three-day youth tournament, which brings together budding basketball talent from eight West African nations—Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Liberia, Niger Republic, Nigeria and Togo—is being hosted to foster sportsmanship, discipline, and regional camaraderie among young athletes.

Organisers say Gordons’ involvement is aimed at enriching the experience for participants and spectators alike, combining high-level youth basketball with moments of humour and mentorship. The Finals are scheduled to hold at the Dolphins Basketball Court, Onikpètèsi, in Ikeja, Lagos.

In a statement, Gordons said he is honoured to be part of the event, which he described as an avenue for shaping the character of young people through sports.

“I’m proud to be involved because I appreciate the values basketball instils in young people—discipline, teamwork, and resilience,” he said. “I’ll be at the finals to encourage the kids and bring some entertainment to the crowd. This is my way of contributing to the event’s success.”

The comedian is expected to engage directly with participants and attendees during the closing ceremony, adding a motivational and light-hearted touch to what promises to be a celebration of youth development through sport.

FIBA’s Zone Three encompasses countries within West Africa and plays a pivotal role in grassroots basketball development across the region. This maiden tournament marks a key step in strengthening youth engagement and cross-border collaboration through sport.

The blend of athleticism and cultural entertainment is part of a broader effort by FIBA Africa to make youth tournaments more inclusive and inspiring for young players.
