The Lagos State Sports Commission on Tuesday gave bond certificates to 13 retirees, as part of its determination to clear outstanding pensions to workers, who served the commission meritoriously before their retirement.

The event held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere marked a milestone in the government of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s welfarism for its citizens. It saw the commission’s former workers, who had retired in 2015 and 2017 all beaming with smiles at the brief presentation. The Commission’s Executive Chairman, Dr. Kweku Tandoh expressed appreciation to Governor Ambode for approving the fund to clear the over N60 million backlog of gratuities for the retirees last week, out of the over N100 million that will be settled in the next few days.

“Today is a great day and it gives a lot of joy to me and the pensioners. When I came to the commission a year ago, one of the issues I met on ground was the outstanding gratuities and benefits of our pensioners. “The Director General of the Commission, Mr. Bank-Anthony and I approached the governor on the matters and I am glad to let you know today that the governor graciously approved it.

“It has never happened in the history of the commission and we have divided the scheme into two. We are paying the pensioners that fall under the new scheme with the sum of N60 million, while in the next few days we will pay the pensioners that fall under the old scheme over N43 millions,” he said

While advising the pensioners to spend the money wisely, Mr. Bank- Anthony said: “I am happy that the backlog of gratuities of the pensioners who had served the commission during their active days have been resolved.

“I think we need to commend the Lagos State Governor for coming at this moment to graciously approve the huge amount of money. It shows that he has the interest of the people at his heart and he is concerned about the wellbeing of the retirees, who had served this state for more than 20 years.”

Among those who got their bond certificates were the former Director of Sports, Lagos State Sports Council, Mrs Grace Asagba and the former Manager of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Okanlawon Lawal Ibrahim.
