MKO Abiola U-20 Championship Holds In May


footballFifty players are expected to compete for trophy and prize money in the maiden edition of the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola’s Under-20 football championship holding at the Campus Mini Stadium, Lagos Island will hold between May 13 and June 12.

According to the organisers, the event tagged: “Afo Football’ championship, is to commemorate the late pillar of sports, who singlehandedly sponsored clubs and promoted grassroots football development during his days.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos to announce the championship, the sponsor, Afolabi Onanaike, said he was inspired by the great deeds of the late business mogul, hence the need to immotalise him using the under-20 talents hunt as an opportunity.

According to him, “the championship would be played every year and it will be dedicated to late Abiola, the pillar of sports,” while also stating that entry form for the tournament closes on April 30.

“The competition is strictly for under-20 players, we will not allow over aged or professional players because the essence is to discover players young.

“Abiola means a lot to us and he was the father of sports. He was the one that built our local league. We cannot forget somebody like Abiola and that is why we are calling on the Lagos State government and the Abiola family to support us.”

“Ambode is a governor who loves youths and like he said in his campaign, he would support anything that is grassroots-based because it is a way of empowering the youth,” he concluded.
