Nigeria @ 65: Over 400 golfers set for TYB Independence Tournament

Over 400 golfers are expected to compete in the Nigeria @ 65 Independence Golf Tournament at the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club, Abuja.

The week-long tournament, organised to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary, will also honour both retired and serving officers of the Nigerian Army.
Chairman of the Independence Committee, Dr. James Agbonhese, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja, noting that the tournament will tee off on Saturday, September 27, with a full week of activities lined up.

Agbonhese said the event was carefully designed to celebrate the nation’s independence while promoting the values of perseverance, discipline, and excellence.
“This tournament is more than just a sporting competition. It is an opportunity to reflect on the values upon which our nation was founded—unity, perseverance, discipline, and excellence,” he said.

He added that the tournament also symbolises growth and development for the golf community, with several new infrastructural projects at the club set for commissioning during the week.

Agbonhese expressed gratitude to sponsors, participants, and supporters for their contributions and extended special appreciation to the Grand Patron, Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. O.O. Oluyede, for his “tireless support and visionary leadership” in making the event possible.

“As we celebrate this special occasion, let us also remember the sacrifices of our founding fathers and heroes who fought to secure our independence. Their legacy calls us to play our part in building a stronger and more united Nigeria,” he concluded.
